Terrier Twelve – #5: Women’s Soccer Secures 2025 Patriot League Championship
July 30, 2025 | General, Women's Soccer
Returning for a 17th year, the Terrier Twelve recognizes the top achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. Check back each Monday and Wednesday this summer as we unveil this year's Terrier Twelve on GoTerriers.com.
Coming in at number five in this year's Terrier Twelve is women's soccer, which returned to the top of the Patriot League pinnacle with its fifth championship as a league member and 14th conference title in program history.
Beginning with a 1-1 draw at Loyola Maryland on Sept. 21 and its first win of the year on Sept. 25 at Colgate, BU went unbeaten against Patriot League foes during the regular season, becoming the first team in the conference to achieve that feat since 2018 and doing so for the third time since 2013. Thanks to a 1-0 win over Army West Point in the regular season finale on an 83rd-minute goal from freshman Olivia Avellar, the Terriers earned the No. 2-seed in the Patriot League Tournament.
BU and Army met again just over a week later in the Patriot League semifinal round at Nickerson Field. The Black Knights struck first in the 29th minute, only for senior Morgan Fagan to net the equalizer in the 68th minute. The match headed to two overtime periods when junior Margy Porta sent home the rebound off her own shot for the game-winner, sending the Terriers back to the Patriot League championship game for the first time in four seasons.
Three-time defending champion Bucknell awaited BU in Lewisburg, Pa. for the title match. The Bison drew first blood with a 67th-minute goal, but junior Morgan Weaver responded with her first career goal in the 86th minute, just 4:27 remaining in regulation.
Both teams went scoreless through both overtime frames to send the game to penalty kicks. Senior goalkeeper Celia Braun entered the match from there to occupy the Terrier net. The Terriers converted their first three shots, only for Bucknell to level it in the fifth round. Both sides traded scores in the next four rounds before junior Gianna Savella found the back of the net in the 10th round. Braun skipped to her left to swat away the ensuing Bucknell chance to guide BU to its 15th NCAA Tournament appearance.
With her heroics, Weaver was named the Patriot League Tournament's Most Valuable Player. Fagan, graduate student Lily Matthews and classmate Mackenzie Stickelman joined Weaver on the All-Tournament Team.
The Terriers went on to face No. 4-seed Texas in the first round, where Fagan scored the first BU NCAA Tournament goal in 10 seasons with a 20th-minute tally.
Seven Terriers garnered All-Patriot League recognition, with Porta and classmate Giulianna Gianino leading the way with first team selections. Porta recorded a career high eight goals in 2024 to match Gianino for the team lead. Gianino paced the Terriers with 21 points, moving into a share for 12th place in the program records with 46 career points. Fagan capped her BU career with 41 points, good for 17th place.
