Terriers Edged by Vermont in Overtime, 3-2
September 5, 2025 | Field Hockey
Rachel Turer and Molly Driscoll each found the back of the cage and gave the Terriers leads of 1-0 and 2-1, respectively, before the Catamounts scored late in regulation and then 8:46 into overtime.
Sophomore Abbey Chun made five saves in goal for the Terriers while senior Caroline O'Brien, senior Megan Wetzel and junior Bella Bergner all earned one assist.
BU moves to 0-2 on the year while Vermont improves to 1-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU controlled play in the early stages and nearly scored on a wide-open chance in front of the goal in the 9th minute of play.
- The Terriers earned the only two corners of the opening half but settled for a scoreless draw at the half.
- With the Terriers down a player due to a yellow card early on in the third quarter, they were able to draw a corner and capitalize on it.
- The play was set up for Turer at the top of the circle and the freshman drilled a shot inside the left post off assists from Wetzel and Bergner at the 33:47 mark.
- UVM was able to get an equalizer in the final minute of the third when Alicia Battistelli handled a long pass being blasting a shot to the back of the cage from the left side of the circle.
- The Terriers regained the lead early in the fourth quarter when O'Brien collected a rebound at the left post off a save from a redirect and then pushed the ball back towards the goal. The ball tipped up in the air, allowing Driscoll to pop it up over UVM netminder Merle Vaandrager and in at 46:32 for her first tally as a Terrier.
- Off a restart with three minutes left in regulation, UVM's Sophia Lefranc penetrated the top right of the circle before slipping a pass to Consu de Castro above the far post to send the game into overtime.
- Vermont started overtime on a green card and the Terriers quickly earned a corner only to have the resulting shot go off a teammate.
- BU created two more chances to no avail but got two big saves from Chun on the other end to keep its chances alive.
- A scramble in the middle of the circle resulted in the winner as Lefranc poked at the ball and got it to Battistelli, who knocked it in to end the contest.
- The Terriers doubled UVM in corners, 6-3, while the Catamounts held a 13-12 edge in shots.
- Vaandrager made four saves in goal for Vermont.
- Sisters Lily Johnson and Lucy Johnson each made their first collegiate start.
- BU will return to action on Friday (Sept. 5) when it visits No. 14 Massachusetts.
- Game time in Amherst is set for 1 p.m.
