No. 16/17 Terriers to Open 2026 Season on Sunday at No. 2/3 Syracuse

The No. 16/17 Boston University men's lacrosse team will open its 2026 season on Sunday when the Terriers travel to No. 2/3 Syracuse. Game time is set for 1 p.m., and it will be broadcast on ACCNX.
TERRIER TIDBITS
- BU is facing Syracuse for the first time; the Orange are the 33rd different Division I opponent the Terriers have faced.
- The Terriers are 9-3 all-time in season openers, including a 9-7 win at Siena last season.
- This is the third straight season that BU is starting its regular season away from home.
- The Terriers are 6-1 in season openers that are not held at Nickerson Field.
- Timothy Shannehan was arguably the top rookie in the nation last season and enters his sophomore season with several national honors to his name.
- He was selected as a preseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse and USA Lacrosse Magazine.
- Shannehan was also No. 44 in Inside Lacrosse's annual ranking of the top 50 men's college lacrosse players.
- The 2025 Patriot League and ECAC Rookie of the Year, Timothy Shannehan was also ranked No. 1 on Inside Lacrosse's Final Freshman Impact Rankings after he led all NCAA rookies with 61 points thanks to 32 goals and 29 assists.
- Shannehan also garnered preseason All-Patriot League accolades along with senior Connor Kehm and sophomore Andrew Pape.
- Kehm, one of three captains this season along with classmates Charlie Huntley and Jimmy Kohr, was a Second Team All-PL and Second Team All-New England standout at close defense in 2025.
- He started all 16 games last season, leading the Terriers with a career-high 30 caused turnovers and a career-best 56 ground balls.
- Kehm became the fourth different Terrier in program history to record 30+ caused turnovers in a single season.
- Pape was a Second Team All-PL honoree after an impressive rookie season in the Terrier midfield.
- He started all 15 games in which he appeared, scoring 17 goals and adding three assists for 20 points.
- Kohr enjoyed a breakout season in his first year starting at attack, as he led the Terriers with a career-high 43 goals and added a career-best 14 assists for a career-high 57 points last season.
- He was a major reason why BU boasted the top man-up unit in the country last season, finishing second in the NCAA with nine man-up markers.
- As a team, the Terriers converted on 56.4% of their extra-man opportunities a year ago.
- Sophomore Madden Murphy is set for his second season at the faceoff X.
- He ranked second in the Patriot League and third among all NCAA rookies with a .551 win percentage.
- Murphy was also second on the Terriers with 55 ground balls.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Connor Phillips is projected to make his first collegiate start following the graduation of Will Barnes.
SCOUTING SYRACUSE
- Syracuse enters the year in the top three of both major national polls following last year's trip to NCAA Championship Weekend.
- The reigning ACC champion, Syracuse was picked first in the conference's preseason poll.
- •Syracuse boasts seven preseason All-Americans as picked by Inside Lacrosse, including first-team honorees Joey Spallina (attack) and Michael Leo (midfield).
- Spallina led the Orange in assists (55) and points (90) last season and is the team's top returning goal scorer (35) from a year ago.
- Junior faceoff specialist John Mullen is a Second Team preseason All-American after finishing sixth in the NCAA with a .630 win percentage and a program-record 182 ground balls.
- Senior close defenseman Billy Dwan III earned preseason All-America accolades after finishing with 18 caused turnovers and 33 ground balls last year.
- Senior goalkeeper Jimmy McCool was also a preseason All-American after being named ACC Goalie of the Year in 2025.
