No. 16/17 Terriers Fall at No. 2/3 Syracuse, 13-6

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Sophomore Timothy Shannehan scored two goals, but the No. 16/17 Boston University men's lacrosse team fell to No. 2/3 Syracuse, 13-6, on Sunday afternoon at JMA Wireless Dome.
BU (0-1) was within three at halftime, but Syracuse (1-0) pulled away in the third quarter to secure the victory.
Senior Jimmy Kohr had a goal and an assist while freshman Peyton Forte found the back of the net in his collegiate debut. Senior Ethan Hart and junior Donald Varnerin also scored for BU, with sophomore Andrew Pape adding an assist.
Sophomore Connor Phillips played well in his first collegiate start, particularly during settled 6-on-6 situations, and finished the day with 12 saves. Senior Connor Kehm led the Terrier defense with five ground balls and two caused turnovers while sophomore Murphy McLaughlin gathered three ground balls and had a caused turnover in his first start at close defense. Phillips, sophomore Zac Maggiacomo and junior Jackson Matthews also had one caused turnover apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Luke Rhoa opened the scoring for Syracuse just 1:29 into the proceedings.
- Hart answered for BU with 9:35 on the clock with a nice dodge down the left alley.
- Phillips and the BU defense held the Orange offense at bay until two goals just 27 seconds apart made it 3-1 with 3:04 left in the opening quarter.
- Forte cut the deficit to one with 1:33 left. Pape drew a double up top and found Forte for the freshman's first collegiate goal.
- Wyatt Hottle made it 4-2 at 12:04 of the second stanza, but Kohr brought BU back within one again with his first goal of the season at 8:18.
- With Syracuse ahead, 5-3, BU had a lengthy possession in the final minute of the half but came up empty.
- The Orange scored in transition with just one second left to take a 6-3 lead into the break.
- Syracuse pushed that lead to 8-3 with two quick goals to start the third quarter.
- Shannehan got off the mark with his first goal at 8:55, but Syracuse scored at 6:04 and then converted off the ensuing face-off to make it 10-4.
- After a nifty Phillips kick save, Varnerin scored a pole goal after the ensuing clear when he caught a Kohr pass at goal line extended and beat Jimmy McCool.
- The teams traded goals to end the third quarter, with the Orange holding a 12-6 advantage.
- Syracuse scored with 3:36 remaining in regulation to create the 13-6 final.
- BU held Syracuse scoreless on three man-up opportunities.
- The Terriers were 23-of-24 in the clearing game and also forced three failed clears by Syracuse.
- Sophomore Madden Murphy recorded five ground balls and won eight of the 19 faceoffs he took.
- Syracuse edged BU in the ground ball battle, 31-26.
- The Terriers will host Siena for their home opener at Nickerson Field on Saturday, Feb. 7.
- Opening faceoff is schduled for 12 p.m.
