Niklas Wellen, a member of Germany's national team, has joined the Boston University field hockey staff for the 2017 season.
Wellen earned a bronze medal with Germany at the 2016 Olympics Games in Rio and has played in over 70 games for his country. He added a silver medal at the 2015 EuroHockey Nations Championship and most recently was on Germany's fourth-place team at the 2017 Euros. Wellen scored three goals in each of those three major tournaments.
A member of the Crefelder HTC club team, Wellen was on Germany's squad that captured the 2013 World Junior championship. In 2016, Wellen received the Silver Laurel Leaf, the most prestigious sporting award in Germany, with his Olympic teammates.
Earlier this year, Wellen received a degree in industrial engineering from Rheinische Fachhochschule Cologne.
