BOSTON -- The Terrier women's soccer team staked the nation's 12th-ranked Brigham Young team to a 2-0 lead and then saw a late rally come up short in a 2-1 loss to the Cougars in the first round of the Harvard Invitational on Saturday (October 2nd).
The loss dropped the Terriers' record to 6-4-0, while Brigham Young is now 11-1-0.
The Terriers, who saw their three-game winning streak come to an end, will play the University of Pennsylvania on Sunday.
"I thought we played pretty well," said Terrier head coach Nancy Feldman. "But, they are a very good team."
After a scoreless first half, BYU took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Kim Lowe at the 60:21 mark. A little over three minutes later, the
Cougars scored what proved to be the game-winning goal by Sarah Hingham.
The Terriers then mounted a rally led by the third goal of the season by freshman Allison Merkle (Baltimore, MD) at the 71:06 mark. The play was set up when sophomore Megan Cross (Pembroke, MA) fired a restart to Merkle. Her shot ricocheted off the post and past BYU goalkeeper Jennifer Waldron.
The Terriers would put on increased pressure down the stretch but could not score the equalizer.
Senior Meghan Lynch (Andover, MA) played the entire game in the Terrier goal, marking only the second time this year she has played all 90 minutes. In eight of the team's games, she has split the responsibilities with senior Beth Weisman (Potomac, MD). However, Lynch played the entire game against Brigham Young and had 10 saves.
