Women's Soccer Loses In America East Final
November 7, 1999 | Women's Soccer
The Terriers' women's soccer season came to an end as they bowed, 2-1, to the University of Hartford in the America East title game.
With the loss, the team's final record was 13-8-0.
The game pitted the top two teams in the league during the season, as Hartford won the regular-season title with a 9-0 record, while the Terriers finished with an 8-1 mark. Their only loss was a 1-0 decision to the Lady Hawks.
On Saturday, the two teams battled to a 0-0 tie through the first half, although Hartford had the upper hand in the statistics. Through the game's first 45 minutes, the Lady Hawks had outshot the Terriers, 10-2, and had the edge in corner kicks, 4-1.
It wasn't until the 62:20 mark that Hartford took the lead, 1-0, on a goal by Annika Michaels. Her 12-yard blast beat Terrier goalie Meghan Lynch. Lynch came on to play the second half and had two saves.
As had been the case all season, the Terriers alternated goalies during the game with Beth Weisman starting against Hartford. She made 4 saves in her 45 minutes of play.
With her team trailing 1-0, Meghan Cross tied the game off a corner kick by Suzanne Finn just 2:35 after Andersen had staked Hartford to the 1-0 lead.
That set the stage for the game-winning goal by Hartford's Sandra Doreleijers' goal with 17:45 to play in regulation. Doreleijers was named the tournament's outstanding player after leading her team to their third straight conference title.
Three Terriers were named to the All-Championship team. They were goalie Beth Weisman, midfielder Allison Merkle, and forward Suzanne Hudak.
