1998 Women's Tennis Fall Season in Review

The 1998 Boston University women's tennis team ended the fall season with an impressive 3-1 dual-match record, while also participating in several invitational tournaments.
On September 12, the Terriers began the season with a 9-0 victory versus New Hampshire at the Case Center Courts. Selin Nassi, Christina Causway, and Carrie Rose all cruised to 6-0, 6-0 victories at the no. 1, 5, and 6 slots, respectively. The Terriers also had little trouble disposing of the Wildcats in the afternoon's other three singles matches. All three doubles teams won their matches by an 8-1 score.
Immediately after their match with New Hampshire, the Terriers traveled north to Syracuse, NY to compete in the SUnity Life Classic on September 12 and 13.
Karen Shostakovsky won three matches in straight sets to capture the flight 5 singles championship. In the flight 1 singles draw, Nassi won two matches before falling in the championship match to Brown's Saranga Sangakkara by a score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. Jennifer Momii and Causway each split their first two matches in the tournament before defeating Syracuse players, Miki Kanemitsu and Anna Khvalina, in straight sets to capture third place in the flight 2 and 3 singles draws, respectively.
In doubles action, the team of Rose and Mary Granger defeated a Syracuse team, 8-5, to capture the flight 3 doubles championship. The duo of Momii and Causway won two doubles matches before falling in finals by a hard-fought 8-6 decision.
After a weekend off, two Terrier players traveled to Philadelphia for the Cissie Leary Invitational, which was hosted by the University of Pennsylvania on September 25-27. Nassi lost in the quarterfinals to Cynthia Tow of Boston College, while Christine Cerretani fell in the first round by Rebecca Dirksen of Dartmouth.
The Terriers returned to dual-meet action on September 29 when they traveled to Hanover, NH to face the Big Green of Dartmouth. B.U.'s winning ways continued as they prevailed, 5-4. Causway and Rose each won in straight sets in the no. 4 and 5 singles slots, respectively. Other winners included Nassi at no. 1 singles, and Shostakovsky at no. 6. The top doubles team of Nassi and Cerretani clinched the victory for the Terriers with an 8-4 win.
On October 4, B.U. edged Boston College 5-4 in their return to home action at the Case Center Courts. Each team won three matches in singles play, however the Terriers won two of the three doubles matches to secure the victory. Terrier singles winners included, Momii, Rose, and Shostakovsky, while the doubles teams of Nassi/Shostakovsky and Causway/Granger were victorious.
The following weekend, the Terriers traveled to Providence to compete in the Brown Invitational. In the flight A and C singles draws, Nassi and Granger both captured two matches before dropping their next two to finish fourth in their respective draws.
B.U. experienced similar success in doubles play. The teams of Momii/Rose and Causway/Granger also won their first two matches before dropping their next two to finish fourth in the flight B and C doubles draws, respectively. On a side note, the Terriers won the Alexis Boss Sportwomen's Award for exemplifying the best team sportsmanship throughout the tournament.
The Terriers traveled to New Jersey for the ITA/ECAC Team Tournament on October 16-18. B.U. was eliminated in the first round by a score of 5-1 against Princeton. The sole Terrier winner was Causway at the no. 3 singles position.
October 21 marked the final home match of the season for B.U. as they hosted Yale. Injuries halted the Terrier charge as they were forced to retire one match and default another. Once again, Causway provided the lone bright spot with a three-set victory at the no. 3 singles slot.
The fall season came to an end for the Terriers at the ITA Eastern Region Championships in Philadelphia, PA on November 6-9. Causway and Nassi competed for B.U. in the 128-player singles and the 64-team doubles draw. Causway lost a three-set heartbreaker to cross-river rival Andrea Magyera of Harvard by a score of 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-4. Nassi won her first two matches in straight sets before falling in the round of 16 to eventual tournament winner Carolijn van Rossum of William & Mary by a score of 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
