April 12, 1999 | Softball
NEWARK, DE - The Boston University softball team opened America East Conference play with a doubleheader split with Delaware on Saturday, winning 3-1 in 12 innings and losing 4-3.
The Terriers' scheduled doubleheader at Towson on Sunday was postponed due to rain. A make-up date has not be determined.
In the opener against Delaware, the Terriers scored two runs in the top of the 12th inning and held on for the 3-1 win. Senior Ingrid Anderson (Redmond, WA) walked to lead off the inning and was sacrificed to second by classmate Betsy Gonski (Northampton, MA) before Kerry Herr (New Windsor, NY) blasted a run-scoring double. With one out, Herr stole third and came home on twin sister Courtney's single.
Sophomore Robyn King (12-5) pitched all 12 innings, allowing just six hits and one earned run. King struck out five and walked six, lowering her earned run average to 1.61. Leslie Linnemeyer (Glendale, CA) led B.U. with a season-high three hits, including two doubles, and one RBI, while Aryn Rangel (Greeley, CO) added two singles.
In the nightcap, the Fightin' Blue Hens scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to salvage the split, 4-3. B.U. took a 2-1 lead after Courtney Herr hit a two-run single in the top of the fourth. However, Delaware scored three times off B.U. starter Mary Colleran (7-4) in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead. B.U. then came within one run, 4-3, when Nili Schnairsohn (Stoughton, MA) drove in Rangel with a RBI single in the top half of the fifth, but Delaware hung on. Colleran's five game winning streak came to a halt as she allowed seven hits in six innings. B.U.'s eight-game winning skein also ended.
B.U. returns to action on Tuesday, April 13 when it travels across the Charles River to face defending Ivy League champion Harvard for a doubleheader. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
