Women's Tennis Rolls to Sixth Straight Win

The Terriers' women's tennis team, showing it had no mental letdown after its impressive team title at last weekend's America East Tournament, rolled to its sixth straight win on Wednesday with a 7-2 triumph over UMass/Amherst. The victory improved B.U.'s overall record to 14-9.
"I was concerned about the letdown after our performance at the conference tournament last weekend," noted Terrier head coach Lesley Sheehan. "But, we talked about it as a team, and we kept our intensity up this afternoon (Wednesday)."
What also concerned Sheehan before the match was number-one player Selin Nassi (Miami, FL) was sidelined with the flu.
"Everyone had to move up a notch in the lineup," said Sheehan. "And, they all played well."
Actually, the Terriers had the match wrapped up after the singles play, as they led 5-1. However, the coaches agreed to compete in doubles. Here, the Terriers won two-of-three to account for the final margin.
B.U.'s only loss in singles came at number one where Jennifer Momii, playing the top spot for the first time this year, lost in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 4-6.
Other than that, B.U. players swept their matches in straight sets.
Chrissie Cerretani (Reading, MA) and Mary Granger (Nottingham,ENG), had the easiest time with identical 6-1, 6-1 scores at numbers five and six, respectively.
The other winners were Christina Causway (Wilson, NC), 7-6, 6-3, at number two; Carrie Rose (Bloomfield Hills, MI), 7-5, 6-3, at number three; and Karen Shostakovsky (Atlanta, GA), 6-4, 6-3, at number five.
In doubles play, Granger and Shostakovsky won, 8-5, at number one, and Momii and Rose won at number two, 8-4. At number three doubles, Hsiao Ning Ham (Jersey City, NJ) and Adriana Babisova (Bratislava, Slovakia) teamed up for the first time this season but lost a hard-fought decision, 8-6.
The Terriers will close out their regular season this Friday (May 1st) with a match against Harvard.
"Harvard is one of the top teams in the East, and it will be a good test for us before we go to the Nationals," said Sheehan. "That's because they are the type of team we will face in the NCAA's."
