Soccer Teams Close Out Pre-Season Vs. Canadian Teams
August 29, 1999 | Women's Soccer
Mary-Beth Magner scored a pair of goals and assisted on a third to lead the Terrier women's soccer team to a 4-0 win over a Canadian All-Star club team that played in the W League last year, while the Terrier men battled to a 0-0 tie over the Montreal International Soccer Academy. Both exhibition games were played on Saturday night (August 28th) at Duxbury High School, and it marked the conclusion of pre-season camp for both teams.
The women will open their season this Wednesday (September 1st) at Central Connecticut, while the men play at the Florida International Tournament this Friday (September 3rd) and Sunday (September 5th).
With her performance, Magner (Plymouth, MA) was named the MVP of the game, which was the First Annual South Shore Classic.
The Terriers' other goals were scored by Nicole Soules (Springfield, VA) and Deidre Enos (Milton, MA).
B.U. dominated play throughout, outshooting the visitors, 20 to 3.
In the net, head coach Nancy Feldman used all three of her goalies.
Meghan Lynch (Andover, MA) started, and she was followed by Beth Weisman (Potomac, MD) and Danielle Demers (Portland, ME).
It marked the only exhibition of the pre-season for B.U., and Coach Feldman was pleased with what she saw.
"It was a very successful scrimmage for us," said the coach. "It was a good way to start, and I think we are ready for our season-opener."
In the meantime, the men played their second exhibition game in three days. On Thursday night, they lost to Holy Cross, 3-2. The Terriers controlled play in the first half and led 2-0. Then, in the second half, with head coach Neil Roberts substituting freely, the Crusaders took advantage of two penalty kicks to outscore the Terriers, 3-0.
Against the Montreal team, Roberts saw more encouraging signs from his team's attack.
"We had at least seven good scoring chances," said the coach. "That was much better than we did against Holy Cross.
"The problem was against the Canadian team we just couldn't finish it off," said the coach. "But, it was very encouraging to see us create good scoring chances. With the real good players we have, I know that we will be able to finish off those chances.
"I was very pleased with our defense," said the coach. "We are very sound there, and I know that we will be able to score goals.
"Overall, our team is where I expected they would be at this point," concluded Roberts.
