The Terrier women's tennis team opened competition at the ECAC Tournament in a successful way by defeating Cornell on October 13 in a match played at Princeton.
There were three new scoring policies in place for the tournament, and B.U. seemed to benefit by the changes.
The first change involved doubles. In the past, all dual-team matches started with the six singles followed by the three doubles. At the ECACs, the format changed so that the doubles was played first followed by the six singles matches. This will be the format through the rest of this season and through the NCAAs. Also, just one point went to the team that won two of the three doubles matches. In the past, single points were awarded to each of the doubles winners.
The second change involved the tiebreaker. Instead of waiting until the set reaches 6-6 in games, the tiebreaker took place at 5-5. It was be a 12-point tiebreaker and the player won by two points.
The third change involved scoring in games. There were no ad games The first person who won four points in a game won that game.
The latter two changes are experimental and will be reviewed at the end of the fall season. Then, a vote will be taken to determine whether they will be in effect for the spring season.
"I really liked them and so did the team," said head coach Lesley Sheehan. "The purpose of these changes is to speed up the matches. The intent is to keep matches under three hours, and they accomplished that at the ECACs."
