Unheralded freshman Hannah Bartell (Torrey Pines, CA) won the Flight Four singles title to lead the Terrier women's tennis team at the Harvard Invitational this past weekend (September 29-October 1).
Bartell, who was unseeded entering the competition, posted an impressive 6-2, 6-0 straight set victory over Boston College's Jessica Engle in the title match. In her opening match, Bartell eliminated Dartmouth's Lisa Francazio, 6-2, 6-3. Then, in the semifinals, she had her toughest match of the competition, as she needed three sets to defeat Harvard's Olivia Garcia-McKean, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
"Hannah's play was certainly the highlight of the competition for us," said head coach Lesley Sheehan. "Being unseeded and winning her flight was a big surprise.
"We will be playing at the Brown Invitational this weekend (October 6-8), and she will probably be seeded there," continued the coach.
In other singles competition, junior Christina Causway (Wilson, NC) finished third in the First Flight. Unfortunately, she had to defeat teammate Carrie Rose (Bloomfield Hills, MI), 6-2, 6-3, in the third-place match.
In her opening round match, Causway defeated Boston College's Kiren Fernando, 7-5, 6-2, but then lost to Harvard's Sanja Bajin, 3-6, 0-6, in the semifinals. That led to the third-place match against Rose.
The Terriers' senior co-captain, Rose defeated Harvard's Sanaz Ghazal, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5, in her opening match but lost to Boston College's Cindy Tow, 0-6, 1-6, in the semifinals.
Freshman Lindsey Dynof (Colts Neck, NJ) had a 2-1 record at Flight Two singles. She lost her first match to Harvard's Lara Nagushbandi in three sets, 3-6, 7-5, 2-6, but came back to win her next two matches. First, she defeated Davidson's Elizabeth Moreno, 6-1, 6-0, and then eliminated Harvard's Fleur Broughton, 6-1, 6-4.
Sophomore Alana Marcu (Leonia, NJ), also playing in Flight Two, lost her first two matches-1-6, 1-6, to Dartmouth's Arden Fredekking and 4-6, 6-3, 2-6 to Harvard's Fleur Broughton, but came back to win her final match-6-2, 6-2 over Davidson's Elizabeth Moreno.
In Flight Three, freshman Elena deMendoza (Madrid, Spain) defeated Harvard's Sarah McGinty, 6-2, 6-0, but then lost her next two matches-3-6, 3-6 to Harvard's Lola Ajilore and 4-6, 6-0, 3-6 to Boston College's Ruta Veitas.
In Flight Four, freshman Elisa Glas (Irun, Spain) defeated Dartmouth's Michael Rozas of Dartmouth, 6-3, 6-4, before losing Boston College's Jessica Engle, 3-6, 4-6, and Harvard's Olivia Garcia-McKean, 6-7.
In Flight Five, senior co-captain Ning Ham finished in third place with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Boston College's Angela Nisnik. In her first match, she eliminated Davidson's Catherine Rainbow, 7-6, 6-1, and then lost to Harvard's Susan Charneco, 4-6, 2-6, to set up her third-place match against Nisnik.
In the doubles competition, Marcu and Glas fared the best, as they took third place in Flight Two, while Rose and Dynof finished fifth in Flight One.
"I was very pleased with how we performed in singles," said Sheehan. "On the first day of the competition, our players had a combined 7-1 singles record.
"Hannah did very well in winning her flight, while Christina (Causway) and Carrie (Rose) finished 3-4 in Flight One. I was a little disappointed, though, will how our doubles teams played. I will be looking for new combinations for the Brown Invitational."
