Softball Trades Shutouts With Black Bears in Conference Split
April 16, 2000 | Softball
ORONO, MAINE (April 16) - The Boston University softball team's 16-game winning streak ended on Sunday, April 16, as it split an America East doubleheader, 0-1 and 4-0, with the University of Maine at Kessock Field. Maine junior pitcher Carrie Green shutout the Terriers in the opener, but B.U. answered with a shutout of its own when Terrier junior fireballer Robyn King (Ashby, MA) beat the Black Bears in the second game. The Terriers ran their record to 26-13 overall and 13-3 in America East games, while UMaine's record is now 20-17 and 7-9 in league play.
In the opener, which would quickly develop into a pitcher's dual at Kessock Field, Green earned her second complete-game shutout of the season, allowing only three hits, two by King who batted as the designated player in the first game. B.U. senior pitcher Mary Colleran (Valencia, CA) allowed only two hits over six innings, but lost the game due to a Terrier error in the bottom of the fourth inning that allowed the winning run to cross the plate.
B.U. paid back the favor in the nightcap, as King struck out 14 Black Bears and gave up only three hits while recording her eighth shutout of the season. King, who struck out 12 UMaine batters on Saturday, hit her second two-run home run of the weekend in the third inning to give herself all the run support she would need.
The Terriers added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning when Kerry and Courtney Herr (New Windsor, NY) each drove in a run.
With a 13-3 America East record, B.U. is tied for first place in the conference with Hofstra University, who the Terriers host on Friday and Saturday, April 21 and 22 in an America East four-game series. The University of Delaware, who will host Towson University on Monday, April 17 in a make-up doubleheader of Saturday's rained-out twin bill, is in third place with an 11-3 mark.
The Terriers return to action on Tuesday, April 18 when they travel to Storrs, CT to face the University of Connecticut, the second ranked team in the Northeast region, in a single game at 3:30 p.m.
