April 25, 2000 | Softball
BOSTON, MASS. (April 25) - The Terrier softball team returned to action after an eight-day layoff on April 25 defeating the Harvard Crimson, 5-2, at Soldiers Field. The win improved the Terriers' record to 27-13, while the Crimson dropped to 12-18.
B.U. scored all the runs it would need in the third inning, as the Terriers tallied three runs on four hits to take a 3-0 advantage. Junior second baseman Kerry Herr (New Windsor, NY) led off the inning with a walk before being advanced to third on senior first baseman Amy Parker's (Newburgh, NY) double to leftfield in the very next at-bat. Herr was plated on senior centerfielder Nili Schairsohn's (Stoughton, MA) single to rightfield, while Parker stole home to extend B.U.'s lead to 2-0. The Terriers scored their third run when Schnairsohn advanced home on sophomore third baseman Aryn Rangel's (Greeley, CO) single to rightfield.
After the Crimson scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Terriers added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh to secure the victory. Senior pitcher Mary Colleran (Valencia, CA) made her first at-bat of the season a successful one, as she led off the inning with a line-drive single down the leftfield line. Herr moved Colleran to second with an infield single in the next at-bat. Colleran then reached home with crafty baserunning after a Parker sacrifice hit. Herr scored on Schnairsohn's second RBI single of the afternoon.
The Terriers' pitching trio of junior Robyn King (Ashby, MA), freshman Robyn Horrick (Irvine, CA), and Colleran allowed only five hits, with King recording her 13th win and Colleran earning her first save of the season.
Head coach Deb Solfaro's team returns to the diamond on April 27, when it faces the Eagles of Boston College in a single game at 3:30 p.m. in Chestnut Hill, MA.
