Herr, King and Linnemeyer Lead Softball Over Drexel
April 30, 2000 | Softball
Junior second baseman Kerry Herr (New Windsor, NY) led off game one with a home run and later added two singles, and juniors Robyn King (Ashby, MA) and Leslie Linnemeyer (Glendale, CA) tallied an RBI apiece in the sixth inning of game two, as the Terrier softball team completed a four-game weekend sweep over Drexel University, defeating the Dragons, 4-0 and 2-1, in an America East doubleheader on April 30 at Malvern Field.
In the opener, Kerry Herr went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. She led off the game with a towering fly-ball that cleared the leftfield fence to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead.
B.U. added three more runs in the second inning, with junior leftfielder Courtney Herr (New Windsor, NY) starting the rally with a leadoff infield single before advancing to third base on sacrifice hits by senior centerfielder Nili Schnairsohn (Stoughton, MA) and junior rightfielder Kenya Palmer (Stone Mountain, GA). Courtney Herr scored on a Drexel passed ball, while Schnairsohn, who reached on an error by the Dragons' pitcher, advanced home on a wild pitch. With two outs, Kerry Herr ripped a single to rightfield and moved to third on an error by the Drexel rightfielder. Senior first baseman Amy Parker (Newburgh, NY) completed the Terrier rally with an RBI single up the middle, scoring Kerry Herr.
King and freshman pitcher Robyn Horrick (Irvine, CA) combined for a one-hit shutout for the Terriers. King, who earned her 15th victory of the season, tossed five innings and yielded one hit. Horrick pitched the final two innings in relief, retiring all six batters she faced.
In the nightcap, the game remained scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when Drexel first baseman Jodi Devine hit a two-out solo home run to leftfield to put the Dragons on top, 1-0. However, the Terriers exploded for two runs on four hits in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead. Courtney Herr led off with a line drive to centerfield and took second base on a Drexel passed ball. King plated Herr with a single to centerfield, and moved to second on the throw to the plate. Sophomore third baseman Aryn Rangel (Greeley, CO) advanced King to third with a bloop single to rightfield. Linnemeyer completed the Terrier rally when she hit a hard ground ball to the Drexel second baseman, scoring King on the play.
The Dragons posed a threat to the Terriers in the seventh inning, with centerfielder Alicia Good leading off with a single to centerfield. In the next at-bat, catcher Katie Loomis bunted the ball with the hope of advancing Good to second, but a fast-charging Rangel scooped the ball and rifled it to Kerry Herr, throwing out Good in the process. B.U. senior pitcher Mary Colleran (Valencia, CA) retired the next two Drexel batters to end the game.
Colleran even her record at 6-6, while Drexel hurler Candace Clark (4-9) took the loss.
The Terriers, winners of 22 of their last 23 games, improved to 31-13 overall and 17-3 in America East games. It is the fifth time the Terriers have won 30 games in a season and the third year B.U. head coach Deb Solfaro has lead her team to 30 victories. Drexel dropped to 15-22 (7-15).
B.U. will host America East-rival Hofstra University in an America East doubleheader on May 3 at 12 noon. The Terriers and the Flying Dutchwomen are tied for first place in America East with identical 17-3 conference records and are ranked No. 4 and No. 3, respectively, in the latest NCAA Division I Softball Northeast Region Rankings released on April 27.
