Softball Falls to Delaware, 5-0

Senior pitcher Kristi O'Connell pitched her third no-hitter of the season and sixth of her career as second-seeded University of Delaware defeated third-seeded Boston University, 5-0, in the America East Softball Championship at Hofstra Softball Stadium on May 11.
O'Connell struck out 10 and walked one in improving to 16-10 for the Blue Hens (36-12). America East Rookie of the Year Robyn Horrick (Irvine, CA) suffered the loss for the Terriers (33-18). Delaware now plays Hofstra Friday at 11 a.m. in the winner's bracket of the four-team, double-elimination tournament. Boston University plays Towson at 1:30 p.m.
Delaware scored five times in the third inning to break open a scoreless game. Carolyn Wasilewski led off with a single to right and Mandy Welch reached on an error in the next at-bat. After a sacrifice moved runners to second and third, Chris Brady delivered a two-run double to give O'Connell all the runs she would need. Back-to-back walks to Lauren Mark and Christy Wilkins loaded the bases. Erin Kelly then drove in a run when she reached on an error. Kerri Snyder's groundout to short plated the Blue Hens' fourth run, and Melissa Basilio added a two-out RBI single.
From there it was all O'Connell, who allowed a two-out walk to Terrier junior leftfielder Courtney Herr (New Windsor, NY) in the second inning, and saw B.U. third baseman Aryn Rangel (Greeley, CO) reach on an error in the fifth inning. Rangel advanced to second on a passed ball with two outs, but O'Connell ended any threat by striking out the final Terrier batter of the inning.
Horrick, who allowed four hit and five run in six innings, was victimized by two errors which led to four unearned runs in the decisive third inning.
The Terriers will now play fourth-seeded Towson tomorrow, May 11 at 1:30 p.m. If B.U. wins, it will play the loser of the Hofstra-Delaware game at 4 p.m. However, if the Terriers lose, they will be eliminated from the double-elimination tournament.
