Rangel, Horrick Lead Softball Past Towson
May 12, 2000 | Softball
Terrier freshman pitcher Robyn Horrick (Irvine, CA) tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout, and sophomore third baseman Aryn Rangel (Greeley, CO) hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning as third-seeded Boston University defeated fourth-seeded Towson University, 2-0, in an elimination game in the America East Softball Championship at Hofstra Softball Stadium on Friday, May 12.
The Terriers (34-18) play second-seeded University of Delaware Saturday, May 13 at 10 a.m. The winner of that game would have to defeat unbeaten Hofstra University, the tournament's top seed, twice to win the America East Championship and the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. The Tigers conclude their season at 31-30.
Horrick (12-7), the America East Rookie of the Year, allowed a single in the third inning to Chris Navarro and a single in the fifth inning to Stacey Smith while striking out four and walking one in the complete-game win.
Horrick got all the run she would need in the sixth inning when junior designated player Robyn King (Ashby, MA) walked and Rangel delivered a full-count, two-out home run to right center off Towson starter and loser Julie Hughes (15-15). Hughes allowed four hits while striking out seven and walking three.
