Softball Falls to Hofstra, 1-0
May 13, 2000 | Softball
Senior Alicia Smith pitched a three-hit complete game and junior Lindsay Sawyer had an RBI double in the top of the seventh inning as Hofstra defeated Boston University, 1-0, to win its third-straight America East Softball Championship on Saturday, May 13 at Hofstra Softball Stadium. The Flying Dutchwomen (41-19) earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
Hofstra scored the game's only run when Jen Smith hit a one-out double down the left field line and Sawyer followed with a double to left center.
The Terriers staged a rally in the bottom of the sixth when junior catcher Leslie Linnemeyer (Glendale, CA) led off with a single to left center. Freshman shortstop Kristin Knesek (Humble, TX) then bunted and Alicia Smith's throw to second base forced Sawyer off the base giving the Terriers (36-19) runners at first and second. Junior rightfielder Kenya Palmer (Stone Mountain, GA) sacrificed the runners to second and third. But Alicia Smith got senior first baseman Amy Parker (Newburgh, NY) to ground out to first for the second out of the inning and senior centerfielder Nili Schnairsohn's (Stoughton, MA) grounder down the third base line was stopped by a diving Jessica Luna, who got to her feet at threw across the diamond to end the rally.
Alicia Smith struck out one and did not walk a batter in improving to 20-7. Terrier freshman pitcher Robyn Horrick (Irvine, CA), who earned the first save of her career in Saturday's first game, a 2-1 win over Delaware, and won the second game with a complete-game five-hitter in a 2-0 win over Hofstra, took the loss.
