Softball Swept By Delaware
May 6, 2000 | Softball
Freshman pitcher Robyn Horrick (Irvine, CA) scattered only four hits in six innings in game one, and senior first baseman Amy Parker (Newburgh, NY) delivered the game-tying single in the top of the seventh inning in game two, but it was not enough as Delaware capitalized on four Terrier errors to sweep B.U. by identical 2-1 scores in an America East doubleheader on May 6 at Delaware Field.
In the opener, the Terriers struck first with junior second baseman Kerry Herr (New Windsor, NY) leading off the game with a line-drive single to leftfield before stealing second base. B.U. loaded the bases with one out on a walk and a hit batter to junior leftfielder Courtney Herr (New Windsor, NY) and junior designated player Robyn King (Ashby, MA), respectively. Junior third baseman Aryn Rangel (Greeley, CO) reached first base by taking ball four on a full count, bringing home Kerry Herr to give B.U. a 1-0 lead. However, the Fightin' Blue Hens scored unearned runs in the first and third innings en route to a 2-1 win.
Delaware senior pitcher Kristi O'Connell earned her 15th victory of the season for the Fightin' Blue Hens, tossing a complete-game three-hitter with eight strikeouts. Horrick (10-6) took the loss for B.U.
In the nightcap, trailing 1-0 entering the seventh inning, the Terriers rallied for three hits to tie the game. Kerry Herr led off with a single to rightfield and moved to second on junior catcher Leslie Linnemeyer's (Glendale, CA) sacrifice bunt. Herr advanced to third on a Horrick single to rightfield and eventually tied the game when Parker tallied a single to leftfield on an 0-2 count to even the score at 1-1. Once again, it proved to be for naught, as Delaware scored an unearned run with two outs in the bottom of the inning to win the game, 2-1.
With the sweep, Delaware improved to 34-11 overall and 17-5 in America East, while B.U. dropped to 32-16 with a 18-6 mark in league play.
The Terriers and Fightin' Blue Hens will meet again tomorrow, May 7 at 11 a.m. to conclude their four-game series. The Terriers must sweep Delaware tomorrow to receive the No. 2 seed in the America East Tournament, which will be played from May 11-13 at Hofstra. Seeding for the tournament is based upon conference winning percentage with each team needing to play at least 24 games.
