Terriers Split With Delaware
May 8, 2000 | Softball
Terrier freshman pitcher Robyn Horrick (Irvine, CA) tossed a complete-game, one-hit shutout, and freshman shortstop Kristin Knesek (Humble, TX) drove home junior rightfielder Kenya Palmer (Stone Mountain, GA) with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning for the game's only run in game one of an America East softball doubleheader at Delaware Field on May 7. However, Delaware rebounded immediately in the nightcap, as it tallied one run on three hits in the first inning en route to a 1-0 victory.
In the opener, the game remained scoreless until the fifth inning when Palmer hit a one-out single to rightfield, stole second base, and moved to third on a Horrick single to leftfield. Knesek then struck the ball deep into the outfield, allowing Palmer to score with ease.
Horrick was dominant on the mound, giving up her only hit in the second inning on a line-drive comebacker that ricocheted off her right leg. She improved her record to 11-6 and lowered her team-best earned run average to 0.87. Kristi O'Connell took the loss for the Fightin' Blue Hens, despite allowing only three hits.
In game two, Delaware first baseman Mandy Welch and leftfielder Krissy Chrisztopulosz tallied back-to-back singles to lead off the game for the Fightin' Blue Hens. After the next batter was retired, rightfielder Lauren Mark hit a single to left centerfield, scoring Welch for the game's only run. B.U. had a runner on third base with two outs in the third and seventh innings, but was unable to deliver the game-tying run.
Delaware pitcher Susan Dugan earned her 20th win of the season, throwing a complete-game, three-hit shutout. Senior righthander Mary Colleran (Valencia, CA) took the loss for the Terriers.
B.U. now stands at 33-17 overall and 19-7 in America East, while Delaware is 35-12 and 18-6 in league games. The Terriers, the No. 3 seed, will face second-seeded Delaware on Thursday, May 11 at approximately 2:30 p.m. in the double-elimination America East Tournament in Hempstead, NY. Hofstra (No. 1) and Towson (No. 4) will square off in the other game at 12 noon.
