BOSTON (July 27, 2000) -- Amy Hayes has been named head softball coach at Boston University. Hayes, who spent the last three years as an assistant with the Virginia Tech softball team, replaces Deb Solfaro, who left the position to pursue other career interests after leading the Terriers to a 36-19 record in 2000. She becomes the fourth head softball coach in Terrier history.
A former starting pitcher for the University of Evansville, Hayes' primary responsibilities at Virginia Tech were working with the pitching staff, as well as recruiting and conditioning. Under her guidance, the Hokies' staff ERA in 1999 was 1.03, third-best in the country. The team sported an impressive 1.58 ERA in 2000.
Prior to Virginia Tech, Hayes served as the assistant softball coach at Bradley University in 1996-97. At Bradley, she served as pitching coach and coordinated recruiting. While at Bradley, she served as a player/coach for the Decatur Twister, a women's Amateur Softball Association major softball team. She was also a hitting instructor for the local YMCA.
Hayes was the head softball coach at Maroa-Forsyth High School in Maroa, IL in 1994, and was assistant softball coach at the University of Evansville in 1993.
Hayes' playing career consisted of a stint with the Decatur Sting/Decatur Lady Pride women's ASA major softball team from 1989-94, where she helped lead the club to a third-place finish at the national tournament in 1994. She also played a season in New Zealand, where she received the top pitching award at the New Zealand Club Nationals.
While attending the University of Evansville, Hayes was a four-year starter who guided the Aces to a third-place Mid-Western Collegiate Conference finish as a co-captain her senior year. She was also named to the MCC All-Conference team that season. She holds a 1.48 ERA for her collegiate career.
Hayes graduated from Evansville in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology.
