Thompson Honored By League, National Web Site

November 5, 2001

Zak Thompson is the America East Adidas Rookie of the Week for the second straight week and been named to the National Team of the Week by College Soccer News.com.

Terrier freshman goalkeeper Zak Thompson (Silver Spring, MD), who had a combined total of 12 saves en route to back-to-back shutout wins over Delaware and Towson last weekend (November 2nd and 4th), has been honored by both America East and College Soccer News.com, a national web site devoted to college soccer.

For the second straight week, America East named Thompson its Adidas Rookie of the Week, while College Soccer News.com named Thompson to their national team of the week.

In the 6-0 win over Delaware on Friday night (November 2nd), he had seven saves, while just two days later, he had five saves in the 1-0 win over Towson.

With the two victories, the Terriers wrapped up the regular-season with a 13-4-1 mark overall and a 9-1-1 record in the league. They won the America East title and, with it, the top seed in this post-season tournament which gets underway this week.

This was the third straight week the conference has honored a B.U. player for his achievement during the previous week. Prior to Thompson's back-to-back honors, senior Joachim Kaland (Fonnes, Norway) was named the Adidas America East Player of the Week for scoring three goals and adding three assists in the Terriers' 3-2 win over Albany and 6-1 win over Stony Brook

Earlier in the year, sophomore Andrew Dorman (Flintshire, Wales) was named the player of the week. He was honored after scoring three goals and adding four assists in helping to lead B.U. to a 6-2 win over George Mason and a 4-2 victory over Quinnipiac in the University of Rhode Island/Kappa Classic.

Thompson concluded the season with an overall record of 9-1-1 with a 1.00 goals against average and an.854 save percentage. He has been one of the pleasant surprises for the Terriers this season.

When the season began, he was the backup goalie to returning veteran Matt Smith (Lanchester, England). That's the way it remained through the first six games during which the Terriers were 4-2-0.

Then, in the season's seventh game, against Boston College, Smith suffered a contusion of the kidney, which turned out to be a season-ending injury.

Thompson took over the job against Northeastern. He responded with a nine-save performance in the Terriers' 2-0 win, and he has been in the lineup ever since.

Both his goals against average and save percentage lead the conference.

"There is no question that Zak has done extremely well this year," said Terrier head coach Neil Roberts. "One of the secrets to his success is that he has been very composed in goal.

"He has come up with one or two big saves every game, and they have come at key times," said the coach. "Certainly, our defense has played very well in front of him, but in the situations when an opponent has gotten by the defense, Zak has been there with his quickness and reflexes to make the save.

Plus, he has very good hands so he doesn't give up a rebound," continued Roberts.

"He has kept himself level-headed both on and off the field," concluded Roberts. "He is a great kid and comes from a terrific family."
