Terriers Drop 5-2 Decision To Virginia
March 20, 2001 | Women's Tennis
Junior Christina Causway (Wilson, NC) and senior co-captain Carrie Rose (Bloomfield Hills, MI) each won her singles match and combined to win at number one doubles, but it was not enough as the Terrier women’s tennis team dropped at 5-2 decision to the University of Virginia on Saturday (March 10th).
The match closed out the Terriers’ spring break trip to Florida. They were 0-3 on the trip, while their overall record this semester is 4-3.
Causway and Rose defeated the Cavaliers at numbers one and two singles, respectively. Causeway posted a 7-6, 6-3 win, while Rose posted a win after UVA’s Henriette Williams retired after the first set in which Rose won, 7-5.
Unfortunately, Virginia dominated the rest of the singles competition, winning the next four matches. At number three singles, freshman Lindsey Dynof (Colts Neck, NJ) lost in a tough three-set match, 7-5, 1-6, 3-6. Freshman Elena deMendoza (Madrid, Spain) lost at number four, 6-3, 6-4. Sophomore Alana Marcu (Leonia, NJ) lost at number five, 6-1, 6-3. Finally, freshman Hannah Bartell (Rancho Santa Fe, CA) lost at number six, 6-0, 6-0.
As doubles began, once again, Causway and Rose came out on top with an 8-4 win at number one doubles. However, UVA won the second and third doubles matches to come away with the point. Dynof and deMendoza lost at number two, 8-5, while Marcu and senior Hsiao Ning Ham (Jersey City, NJ) lost by the same 8-5 score at number three doubles.
The Terriers will return home to play Harvard on March 17th.
