Women's Tennis Suffers Tough 4-3 Loss To BC
April 11, 2001 | Women's Tennis
The Terrier women’s tennis team, shooting for its third straight win, came up just short as it dropped a 4-3 decision to Boston College at the Harvard courts on Tuesday (April 11th).
It marked the fourth straight match in which the Terriers were involved in a 4-3 decision, and they were 2-1 in the previous three. They had win back-to-back wins over Dartmouth (March 31st) and Syracuse (April 7th), while they lost to Virginia Commonwealth by the 4-3 margin on March 24th.
The loss to the Eagles evened B.U.’s spring season record to 7-7.
"It was a great match," Terrier head coach Lesley Sheehan said. "We needed to get the point from the doubles matches, and we weren’t able to do that. Unfortunately, we didn’t play our best tennis in doubles."
The Terriers managed to win just one of the three doubles matches.
Playing at number one, senior co-captain Carrie Rose (Bloomfield Hills, MI) and junior Christina Causway (Wilson, NC) posted an 8-6.
Shortly before Rose and Causway came off the court with their win, senior co-captain Hsiao Ning Ham (Jersey City, NJ) and sophomore Alana Marcu (Leonia, NJ) lost at number three doubles, 8-2.
The third and deciding doubles match came down to freshmen Lindsey Dynof (Colts Neck, NJ) and Elena deMendoza against BC’s tandem of Jessica Engle and Allison Ashley. The final margin was just two games, as Engle and Ashley came away with an 8-6 win.
Trailing 1-0 entering the singles play, the Terriers got wins from Rose at number two singles, 6-3, 6-2, from Dynof at number three, 6-3, 6-2, and from deMendoza at number four, 7-5, 6-1.
In the meantime, Causway lost at number one, 6-1, 6-4, and freshman Hannah Bartell (Rancho Santa Fe, CA) lost at number six, 6-2, 6-0.
That left the score tied, 3-3, with only one match left on the court - Marcu vs. Anisha Fernando at number five.
Fernando won the first set, 6-3, while Marcu came back to win the second set, 7-6. However, in the third set, Fernando prevailed, 6-1.
The Terriers will close out their regular-season next Tuesday (April 17th) at Providence.
They will then travel to Yale on April 27-29 for the America East championships.
