CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. ­ Boston University senior second baseman Kerry Herr drove in the winning run with a double down the left side in the top of the ninth inning as the visiting Terriers defeated Boston College, 2-1, in extra innings on Thursday.
BC loaded the bases in the first and sixth innings, but could not bring home a run. The Eagles left runners on base in each inning ­ except the ninth ­ for a total of 15 on the day. B. U. stranded 12.
The Terriers claimed a 1-0 lead in the fourth as senior catcher Leslie Linnemeyer singled in sophomore shortstop Kristin Knesek. BC evened the score in the bottom of the seventh as Cara Blumfield advanced to third on a wild pitch and came home as Jen Asbury singled up the middle, tying the score with no outs. The next three Eagles were sat down to end the threat and send the game into extra innings.
B. U. sophomore pitcher Tiffany Finateri pitched the first six innings with one run allowed on six hits. She struck out six Eagle batters. Robyn Horrick (11-5) hurled the final three innings, surrendering two hits with three strikeouts for the win.
BC's Kim Ryan started the game, striking out three in two innings with no runs allowed and no hits. Brooke Shull entered in the third for one strikeout, one hit and one run in two innings of work. Tekae Malandris (7-11) pitched five innings, striking out five, while allowing one run on one hit. Malandris was charged with the loss.
B. U. improves to 24-11, 11-3 in America East play, and extended its winning streak to 14 games. BC fell to 22-18.
B. U. hosts America East opponent Towson for a four-game series this weekend. The Terriers and Tigers play doubleheaders on Saturday, April 21, and Sunday April 22. Game time on both days is 12 p.m. As part of senior day activities, the Terriers' five seniors will be recognized in a between-games ceremony on Sunday.
