Stanford Blanks Terriers In NCAA Women's Tennis Action
May 11, 2001 | Women's Tennis
The unranked Terrier women's tennis team lost to the nation's top-ranked Stanford Cardinal, 4-0, on Friday (May 11th) in the first round of the NCAA Division 1 women's tennis tournament that was played at Stanford's Taube Family Tennis Stadium
With the loss, the season came to an end for the Terriers, who finished the year with a 15-10 record.
This marked the third straight B.U. had advanced to the NCAA's and the third straight year they were eliminated by a California school. Two years ago, they journeyed to Malibu where Pepperdine defeated the Terriers.
Last year, it was UCLA that sent the Terriers home after the opening round.
Stanford improved to 25-0 this season, as the Cardinal began quest for its 12th NCAA title.
There were very competitive matches, though. Terrier freshman Lindsey Dynof (Colts Neck, NJ) lost at number three singles, 6-2, 6-2, while freshman Hannah Bartell (Rancho Santa Fe, CA) lost at number six, 6-2, 6-2.
With that win at number six, Stanford had wrapped up four team points. Thus, the other singles matches on the court were suspended, as they would not have had any bearing on the outcome of the match.
That was unfortunate for the Terriers as they were holding their own against the highly-touted Cardinal.
Terrier freshman Elena deMendoza (Madrid, Spain) lost the first set, 6-3, but was leading in the second set, 3-1, when her match was suspended.
Sophomore Alan Marcu (Leonia, NJ) lost her first set, 6-1, but was tied, 3-3, in the second set when her match was suspended.
The only other match that was suspended was at number two singles where senior co-captain Carrie Rose (Bloomfield Hills, MI) lost her first set, 6-1, and had not started the second set. The match opened with Stanford sweeping two doubles matches.
Top-ranked Lauren Barnikow and Lauren Kalvaria blanked junior Christina Causway (Wilson, NC) and Rose, 8-0. Then, second-ranked Laura Granville and Gabriela Lastra shut out Dynof and deMendoza, 8-0.
The Terriers' third doubles team of senior co-captain Hsiao Ning Ham (Jersey City, NJ) and Marcu was losing to Stanford's Sarah Pestieau and Keiko Tokuda, 7-2, when the match was suspended. The reason was that the Cardinal had already sewn up the doubles point.
The only other match that counted toward Stanford's four points came at number one singles where Granville, the nation's defending NCAA singles player and the current top-ranked collegiate player in the nation, defeated Causway, 6-1, 6-0. It improved Granville's record this year to 25-1.
