Junior Katie Smurthwaite scored her first goal of the season on a header in the 104th minute to lift the Terrier women's soccer team to a 2-1 double overtime win over Boston College at Nickerson Field on Thursday night. The victory, which saw B.U. come from a one-goal deficit to a one-goal win, ended a three-game losing streak for the Terriers who are now 4-5-1.
The winning goal was set up when junior Rebecca Beyer brought the ball over midfield and drove to the right sideline. She sent the ball wide right to freshman Meghann Cook, who then delivered the ball deep in the BC box. It was there that Smurthwaite headed the ball into the Eagle goal. Eagle goalkeeper Kate Taylor made the save but she was at least a foot into the goal, according to the referee. Thus, the Terriers had their winning score.
Smurthwaite also played a key role in the Terriers' first goal of the game. With B.U. trailing BC, 1-0, early in the second half, Smurthwaite made a nifty move past an Eagle defender and was coming in on Taylor. A BC player came back to cover on the play and tackled Smurthwaite in the box.

The result was a penalty kick and senior Allison Merkle took the shot. She drilled the ball to the far left hand corner of the goal. Taylor lunged but it was too late and the goal tied the game, 1-1, in the 49th minute of action.
BC, which entered the game ranked second in the region and number 24 in the nation in the NSCAA poll, drew first blood. Freshman Katie McGregor collected the ball from Lindsey McArdle and took a shot that beat Terrier junior goalkeeper Jessica Clinton to the far right side.
"I have to admit that I was a little discouraged when they took that 1-0 lead," said Terrier head coach Nancy Feldman. "We have had problems generating goals and I was beginning to wonder if this was going to be 'Here we go again.'
"But, our players showed tremendous will and determination," Feldman went on. "And, we had players who went above and beyond tonight. People like Ashley Chassar and Susan Marschall, and Jessica Clinton gave us great efforts.
"Katie Smurthwaite, though, gave us the best game she has ever played here," lauded the coach. "She showed that we can really count on her.
"It certainly feels good to win," said Feldman. "We have been fighting hard all season, and we haven't always gotten what we deserved. Our kids are really happy tonight not just for the win. But, we beat a very good BC team, and we really needed this win.
"The chemistry on this team is starting to develop," Feldman concluded. "I like the fight on this team, and it's nice to see they were finally rewarded for how hard they have worked."
