The Terrier women's tennis team continued its fall tournament season over the weekend (October 25-27) at the ITA Women's Regionals and had mixed results competing against 128 of the region's top players.
Juniors Lindsey Dynof (Colts Neck, NJ) and Elena deMendoza (Madrid, Spain) each won early-round matches but were eliminated by seeded players.
Dynof won her first-round match over Bucknell's Nada Curcic, 6-0, 6-3. However, in the next round, she lost to seventh-seeded Sanela Kunovac of the University of Pennsylvania in three tough sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
DeMendoza was equally successful in the first round when she eliminated the University of Hartford's Ana Moria Mora, 6-0, 6-3. Unfortunately, in the second round, she was pitted against Harvard's Courtney Bergman, who was seeded second. Bergman defeated deMendoza, 6-3, 6-0.
Only one other Terrier was entered in singles and that was freshman Laura Ahmes (Sarasota, FL), who was defeated in the first round, 6-1, 6-0, by Columbia's Melissa Nguyen.
The Terriers had two doubles teams entered. Dynof and deMendoza combined efforts to win their first-round match, 8-4. Then, in the next round, they lost a hard-fought match to fifth-seeded Melissa Anderson and Eva Wang of Harvard, 9-8.
Finally, senior captain Alana Marcu (Leonia, NJ) and freshman Monica Shepherd (Austin, TX) lost their opening match to Brown's Alex Arlak and Kerry Meath in a tough 8-6 decision.
"I thought we played some solid tennis," said Terrier head coach Lesley Sheehan. "The problem was that we couldn't get by the seeded players. But, this was one of the elite tournaments in the fall with 128 of the region's top players."
