Terriers End Fall Season On High Note At Dartmouth
November 3, 2002 | Women's Tennis
The Terrier women's tennis team ended its fall tournament season on a high note last weekend (November 2-3) by winning the two singles and one doubles Flights at the Dartmouth Invitational.
Junior Lindsey Dynof (Colts Neck, NJ) won the Flight A singles competition, while freshman Aimee Charest (Somerset, NJ) won Flight B. In the lone doubles competition, Dynof and freshman Monica Shepherd (Austin, TX) emerged as the winners.
As it turned out, the finals resembled a dual match between the Terriers and host Dartmouth as each of the matches pitted a Terrier against a Big Green player.
Dynof, who was seeded number one, defeated Dartmouth's Jayme Ahmed, who was seeded third, 7-5, 6-1. To reach the finals, she beat Dartmouth's Katie Jaxheimer, 6-3, 6-2, in the first round and the Big Green's Evelyn Stevens in the second round, 6-3, 6-2.
The Terriers had two other players in the Flight A singles competition. Senior captain Alana Marcu (Leonia, NJ) was eliminated in the first round, 6-1, 6-1, by Ahmed. Junior Elena deMendoza (Madrid, Spain), who was seeded second, advanced to the semifinals where she also lost to Ahmed, 6-2, 6-2. Thus, in the finals, Dynof gained a measure of revenge for her teammates when she defeated Ahmed.
In Flight B, Charest, who was seeded number one, defeated second-seeded Ann Scott of Dartmouth, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. Along the way, Charest defeated two other Dartmouth players-Janis Hui in the first round, 6-4, 6-1, and Lisa Francazio, 6-1, 6-1, in the semifinals.
Monica Shepherd also competed in the Flight B singles where she advanced to the semifinals before she lost to Scott, 6-4, 6-2.
In the Doubles' Flight final, Dynof and Shepherd combined talents to defeat Jaxheimer and Ahmed, 8-4.
The match provided a reunion of sorts as the Dartmouth women are coached by Bob Dallis, who is in his first year with the Big Green. Dallis graduated from Boston University in 1986 after starring for the Terrier men's tennis team for four years. Dallis went on to coach the B.U. men's tennis team and guided the Terriers to the finals of the America East Conference tournament 10 straight years. The Terriers won the title four times, and Dallis was named the Conference Coach of the Year three times. He then left B.U. in 1998 to coach the Colgate women's tennis team. He remained there for the 2002 spring season when he left to take over Dartmouth's women's program.
"I thought we played very well at Dartmouth," said Terrier head coach Lesley Sheehan. "I thought it was an excellent way for us to finish our fall season and give us confidence going into our off-season winter program and then our spring season.
"I think our freshmen will be a strong class for us," concluded the coach. "I think that before our spring season starts, we have a lot of work to do, but we will be ready."
