Terriers Widen Conference Lead With Binghamton Sweep

VESTAL, N. Y. - The Boston University softball team improved its America East record to 13-1 as the Terriers swept a doubleheader at Binghamton on Sunday, April 27. The Terriers won game one, 2-1, and game two, 8-3.
Boston University improves its overall record to 23-17, while Binghamton fell to 16-15, 6-6 in the America East.
GAME ONE - Boston University 2, Binghamton 1
Three Binghamton errors led to two Terrier runs. Senior first baseman Kate Abney (Denver, Colo.) hit an RBI double to score sophomore pitcher Julie Henneke (Odessa, Fla.) to make the score 2-0.
The Bearcats got one run back in the fifth inning with an unearned run and advanced the potential tying run to second in the seventh, but Henneke shut the door with her ninth strikeout to end the game.
Freshman right fielder Erin McDonald (Macon, Ill.) went 2-for-3 for the Terriers. Abney, playing in her first game since March 22, went 1-for-2 with the Terriers' only RBI.
Henneke (9-5) went the distance, finishing with nine strikeouts and no walks.
The Bearcats stranded six runners - four in the final two innings.
GAME TWO - Boston University 8, Binghamton 3
B. U. erupted for six runs in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 deadlock. The Terriers batted around and combined four hits with three Binghamton errors to break the game open. The Bearcats committed four errors, resulting in six unearned runs.
Freshman third baseman Josey Mendez (Miami, Fla.) started the run with an RBI single. Senior second baseman Kristin Knesek (Humble, Texas) and sophomore designated player DeKenya Williams (San Diego, Calif.) each scored on an error by Binghamton center fielder Jessica Dima. Senior left fielder Tiffany Finateri (Las Vegas, Nev.) had an RBI single, and Henneke put a cap on the six-run outburst with a two-run singles.
Finateri finished 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Henneke went 1-for-4 with 2 RBI.
McDonald (9-6) had a complete-game effort, giving up seven hits and two earned runs. She had three strike outs.
The two teams will conclude the four-game series with a rare Monday morning doubleheader, scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at Binghamton's East Gym Complex.
