The Terrier women's tennis team swept all six singles matches and added the point for winning two of the three doubles matches en route to a 7-0 win over Quinnipiac on Saturday afternoon (April 13th).
It was the second straight win for the Terriers who defeated Boston College, 4-3, on Tuesday (April 9th). It was also the most one-sided victory of the spring season for B.U., which is now 5-7. The team will close out its regular-season on Tuesday (April 16th) with a home match against Providence College.
In the meantime, Quinnipiac, which came into the match off a nine-match winning streak, slipped to an 11-4-0 record.
The Terriers got off on the right foot when they won two of the three doubles matches. It marked only the second time this year they have opened the match with the doubles point.
Senior captain Christina Causway (Wilson, NC) and sophomore Lindsey Dynof (Colts Neck, NJ) won their match at number one doubles, 8-1 over Quinnipiac's Stephanie Petrycki and Cristin Arahovites. Quinnipiac evened the doubles score at 1-1 when Kim Piazza and Liz Axler combined to defeat B.U. sophomores Elena deMendoza (Madrid, Spain) and Hannah Bartell (Rancho Santa Fe, CA), 8-3. The third and deciding win came at number three doubles where Terrier junior Alana Marcu (Leonia, NJ) and sophomore Elisa Glas (Irun, Spain) bested Michelle Nagle and Heather Rehn, 8-4.
"It was great to win the doubles point," said Terrier coach Lesley Sheehan. "I think that we are playing well. I still might make some changes in the lineup, but, in general, I am very happy with how the doubles has been playing."
In singles play, Causway defeated Petrycki, 6-1 in the first set. Then, in the second set, Petrycki, who is Quinnipiac's all-time leading winner with 159 victories, was forced to retire.
The Terriers did not lose a set in the rest of the singles play. Dynof defeated Piazza, 6-2, 6-1; deMendoza swept Arahovites, 6-4, 6-4; and freshman Silvia Guglielmi (Rome Italy) eliminated Danielle Rautenberg, 6-1, 6-1. Marcu also posted identical 6-1, 6-1 wins over Liz Axler, while Bartell defeated Kat Ehle in a pro set, 8-4.
"I think our singles play is on top of its game," said Sheehan. "I think we will be going into the post-season in good shape."
