Women's Tennis Wins By Default Over Providence

The Terrier women's tennis team closed out its 2001-02 regular-season on Tuesday (April 16th) with a win by default over Providence College. The two teams were scheduled to play at B.U.
With the forfeit victory, the Terriers ended their overall season with a 10-8 record. They were 3-1 in the fall with wins over New Hampshire, Army, and Syracuse, while their only loss was to Columbia.
During the spring, they compiled a 7-7 record, with three of the losses coming by a 4-3 margin. Only one point separated them from defeating Florida Atlantic, Brown, and Dartmouth. They were also the beneficiaries of one-point wins over Cincinnati and Boston College. In addition, they earned a win by forfeit over Temple as well as Providence.
"I think one of the disappointing parts of the season was that we didn't play better in doubles," noted Terrier head coach Lesley Sheehan. "In fact, in just two of our matches in the spring, we won the doubles point."
For a team to win the doubles point, it has to win two of the three doubles matches that are contested.
"If we had played better doubles, we would have beaten Florida Atlantic, Brown, and Dartmouth," said the coach.
"I have been very happy with how we have played in singles, though," Sheehan went on. "We have gotten solid play throughout the lineup. It's been hard, too, since we have had a number of players who have been injured during the year, but they have played through it.
"We have also had problems practicing outdoors this spring because of the weather," said the coach. "With all the adversities we have had, I think we have played very well."
The Terriers are off until April 26-28 when they travel to New Haven, CT for the America East tournament. Winners of the last eight conference titles and 12 of the last 13, the Terriers should be favored to win the 2002 title and the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
"There will be a lot of pressure on us because of the success we have had in the past," said Sheehan. "Plus, we want to the win the conference tournament because our goal is to return to the NCAAs."
Leading the Terriers into the America East tournament will be senior captain Christina Causway (Wilson, NC), who has compiled an 11-5 record at number one singles this year. Sophomore Lindsey Dynof (Colts Neck, NJ) has played number two singles all season and has a 12-4 record. She is followed by sophomore Elena deMendoza (Madrid, Spain), who is 7-9 at number three singles. Freshman Silvia Guglielmi (Rome, Italy) is 8-8 at number four singles, which is the same record compiled by junior Alana Marcu (Leonia, NJ) at number five singles. Sophomores Elisa Glas (Irun, Spain) and Hannah Bartell (Rancho Santa Fe, CA) have both seen action at number six singles. Glas is 5-6, while Bartell is 3-2.
