BOSTON - Senior Aryn Rangel (Greeley, CO) belted a two-run home run to deep left centerfield in the sixth inning of a scoreless game, pacing the Boston University softball team to a 2-0 win over Maine at the B. U. Softball Field on Wednesday, April 17. The Terriers won game one, 2-1.
The Terriers got strong pitching efforts from starting pitchers Robyn Horrick (Irvine, CA) and Tiffany Finateri (Las Vegas, NV). Both tossed complete games, with Horrick (8-5) striking out nine and giving up only two hits, and Finateri (4-4) scattering three hits while striking out four and walking only one.
Game One - Boston University 2, Maine 1
Horrick got off to a shaky start, walking two in the top of the first inning to load the bases. She hit Maine pitcher Jennifer Merchant to force in the Black Bears only run of the day.
B. U. got the run back in the bottom of the second on an error by Maine shortstop Erica Sobel, allowing Horrick to reach and Finateri to score from third, tying the score at 1-1.
B. U. got its all-important insurance run in the bottom of the third, thanks to a bases-loaded, no-outs walk to Rangel that forced in freshman shortstop Jamie Haas (Houston, TX) to give B. U. a 2-1 advantage. Merchant regained her composure and struck out the side to get out of the bases-loaded jam.
Merchant (12-9) also struck out the side in the Terriers' half of the fifth. She finished with six strikeouts, all of them in the third and fifth innings. Leigh Ann Hlywak and Jessica Brady recorded hits for the Black Bears.
Game Two - Boston University 2, Maine 0
Finateri and Maine's Candace Jaegge engaged in a pitching duel in game two. Neither team could put together any offensive, as the teams combined for eight hits.
After a scoreless five-and-a-half innings, Haas beat Hlywak's throw from third for the infield single. After a sacrifice bunt by sophomore right fielder Abbey Pauley (Spring, TX) advanced Haas to second, Rangel blasted a two-out home run, her second of the season and 13th of her career, putting B. U. up, 2-0.
Hlywak singled up the middle to lead off the seventh, but the Black Bears (17-23, 5-5 America East) could not advance her.
Jaegge (5-12) struck out two and did not allow a walk.
Boston University (18-19, 12-2 America East) next hosts America East-newcomer Binghamton in a four-game series set to begin on Saturday, April 20. Game one of the doubleheader is slated for 12 p.m. Sunday's doubleheader also starts at 12 p.m.
