BOSTON - Freshmen DeKenya Williams (San Diego, CA) and Julie Henneke (Philadelphia, PA) went a combined 9-for-15 with five runs scored, leading the Boston University softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Binghamton on Sunday afternoon at the B. U. Softball Field. The Terriers won game one, 8-0, in five innings, and game two, 4-3, in nine.
Game One - Boston University 8, Albany 0 (Five Innings)
The Boston University bats came alive against the Bearcats in game one, pounding out a season-high 13 hits in the game, which was shortened to five innings due to collegiate softball's eight-run rule.
Williams began the Terriers' scoring attack in the second inning with a two-out RBI single to right center to score senior first baseman Aryn Rangel (Greeley, CO). Junior second baseman Kristin Knesek (Humble, TX), sophomore right fielder Abbey Pauley (Spring, TX), and Henneke also added RBI hits during the inning, which saw the Terriers build a 5-0 lead on Binghamton pitcher Margaret Yerdon.
The Terriers added two runs in the bottom of the third, as the Bearcats' left fielder Marisa DeStasio misplayed a flyball, allowing sophomore pinch runner Andrea Harner (Pennsauken, NJ) to score from second. Williams followed with an RBI double to score freshman catcher Jennifer Shields (Simi Valley, CA) to make the score 7-0.
Junior Jen Widerberg (Atlanta, GA) hit an RBI single to shallow center, which scored Williams to give the Terriers the 8-0 win. Junior pitcher Robyn Horrick (10-5) went the distance, allowing only one hit for her 12th complete game and fourth shutout of the season. She struck out 10 batters and walked three.
Yerdon (6-9) and sophomore Karen Prievo combined for 13 hits, five earned runs, and two strikeouts, with Yerdon giving up seven hits and five runs in the second inning.
Game Two - Boston University 4, Binghamton 3 (Nine Innings)
Binghamton (18-21, 6-10 America East) appeared to have the game in hand after taking a 3-0 lead on a two-out, two RBI triple by shortstop Melissa Lavin in the fifth inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, though, the Terriers scratched their way onto the scoreboard as Rangel hit an RBI single up the middle to plate Henneke from second, cutting the Bearcats' lead to 3-1. Later in the same inning, junior left fielder Tiffany Finateri (Las Vegas, NV) tied the score with a hard-hit double down the right field line that scored Shields and Williams.
In the top of the seventh, starting pitcher Mary Karen Wheat was forced out of the game after injuring her hand on a pitched ball while she was at bat. Freshman Megan Delalla took Wheat's place in the circle, and performed admirably, pitching 2 2/3 innings of one-hit ball.
The Terriers, though, loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth on the strength of a single and two walks, and Henneke ended the game with a shot to deep right that allowed Williams to score the game-winning run from third base. Yerdon, who came on in relief of Delalla during the inning, took the loss, her second in as many games.
Boston University (22-19, 16-2 America East) next travels to Maine for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 24. Game time is 2 p.m.
