Freshman Duo Earns Weekly Honors, Leads Terriers Into Tourney
April 22, 2002 | Softball
BOSTON - Two Boston University freshman softball players earned America East weekly honors this week. Shortstop Jamie Haas (Houston, TX) was named Co-Player of the Week, and outfielder/pitcher DeKenya Williams (San Diego, CA) was the Rookie of the Week. The duo paced the Terriers to a 6-0 week and a berth in next month's America East Championship.
Haas earned the Player of the Week award for the second straight week. It is the third week in a row that a Boston University freshman has been named the Player of the Week. Center fielder Julie Henneke (Philadelphia, PA) was named the Player of the Week on April 8. Haas shares the award with Hartford's Liz Nadeau.
Haas was the epitome of a leadoff hitter in the six B. U. conference wins, getting on base a remarkable 60.8 percent of the time. In the Terriers' 4-3 win over Binghamton on Sunday, Haas got on base on each of her five at bats. She singled, earned three walks, and got to first on an error. She also scored three of the Terriers' six game-winning runs. For the week she batted 7-for-18, scoring five runs with four walks.
Williams emerged this week as a potent bat in the middle of the Terriers' lineup. She led the Terriers by batting .500, and had three runs batted in, five runs scored, and three doubles. She scored the game-winning run in the Terriers' 4-3, ninth inning victory over Binghamton on Sunday, after hitting a single to lead off the inning.
Haas leads the Terriers in batting (.375), slugging (.500), on-base percentage (.420), hits (48), triples (5), total bases (64), and stolen bases (12). Among America East competition, Haas leads the league in hits and triples, and is second in batting and on-base percentage.
The Terriers (21-19, 16-2 America East) have eight games in a row and 13 of 14. They own a six-game lead in the conference, and have clinched a spot in the four-team America East Championship on May 9-11 in Burlington, Vt. They travel to Maine for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 24, before hosting second-place Hartford for four games on Saturday, April 27, and Sunday, April 28.
