Game One - Maine 7, Boston University 5
Maine (20-26, 8-8 America East) took a commanding 6-0 lead after two innings. In the first, senior shortstop Erica Sobel and freshman pitcher Jennifer Merchant produced RBI hits, giving Maine a 2-0 advantage. Sobel added a three-run single in the second, and Merchant followed it with an RBI double to left.
B. U. got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning. Haas tripled and scored on a ground out by Henneke.
In the sixth, the Terriers added three runs on just one hit. Thanks to a Maine defense that gave up an error, two walks, a hit-by-pitch, a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly, the Terriers pulled to within 6-4 after five and a half. Sophomore designated player Nichole Kurker (Medfield, MA) had B. U.'s only hit of the inning, an RBI single that scored junior pitcher Tiffany Finateri (Las Vegas, NV).
Maine added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning, and Finateri scored from third on a Merchant wild pitch to make the score 7-5.
Merchant (14-10) went the distance, giving up seven hits while striking out eight and walking three. For B. U., junior Robyn Horrick (10-6) was tagged with five earned runs in 3.1 innings.
Game Two - Boston University 1, Maine 0 - 10 innings
The two teams battled for nine scoreless innings. Freshman catcher Christy King (Albuquerque, NM) led off the top of the 10th inning with a double to left center. After getting advanced to third base by a Haas sacrifice bunt, sophomore center fielder Abbey Pauley (Spring, TX) singled through the left side to score the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run.
Both Henneke and Maine pitcher Candace Jaegge pitched all 10 innings. Henneke (8-3) struck out eight while scattering three hits. It was her eighth complete game and team-leading fifth shutout. Haas went 3-for-4 in the game.
Boston University (23-20, 17-3 America East) wraps up conference play by hosting second-place Hartford in a four game series on Saturday, April 27, and Sunday, April 28. The Terriers have clinched a spot in the America East Championship, to be held on May 9-11 in Burlington, VT.
