2002 America East Women's Tennis Championship Information
The top-seeded Terrier women's tennis team will be going after its ninth straight America East team title and 13th overall, when it competes in the 2002 conference championship, which will be held this weekend (April 26-28) at the Connecticut Tennis Center in New Haven, CT.
By virtue of its top seed, B.U. is the only team in the seven-team field that will receive a bye and will not play until noon on Saturday (April 27th). At that time, the Terriers will take on the winner of the match between fourth-seeded New Hampshire and fifth-seeded Vermont. The Wildcats and Catamounts will play on Friday (April 26th) at 3:00 p.m. The winner of the B.U.-New Hampshire/Vermont match will play in the semifinals on Saturday at noon.
In the other bracket, third-seeded Binghamton will play sixth-seeded Hartford at 9:00 a.m. on Friday. In the other match involving this bracket, second-seeded Stony Brook will play seventh-seeded Albany at 12 noon. The two winners will play on Saturday at 9:00 a.m.
The winner of the B.U. bracket will meet the winner of the Stony Brook bracket at noon on Sunday (April 28th).
As has been the case the past three years, the tournament winner will receive an automatic bid to the 2002 NCAA Division 1 Women's Tennis Championship.
Since 1989, the Terriers have won the conference tournament every year in which they have competed. The only break came in 1993 when B.U. chose to compete in the Rolex Championship, which was the same date as the conference tournament.
For Terrier senior captain Christina Causway (Wilson, NC), winning the conference tournament this year will hold a special meaning as she will become the first Terrier women's tennis player ever to advance to the NCAA Tournament four times. As a freshman in 1999, she was on the victorious B.U. team that played at Pepperdine University in the first round of the NCAAs. The next year, she traveled to UCLA with her Terrier teammates to take on the Bruins. Then, last year, after winning the conference title, the Terriers were sent to Stanford for the first round of the tournament.
Causway has played number one singles all year and has compiled an 11-5 record. The only player with a better record is sophomore Lindsey Dynof (Colts Neck, NJ), who was 12-4 at number two singles. Silvia Guglielmi (Rome, Italy), who is the only freshman playing regularly, was 8-8 this year while playing at number four singles. Junior Alana Marcu (Leonia, NJ) was 8-8 at number five singles. The others who have played this year include sophomore Elena deMendoza (Madrid, Spain), who was 7-9 at number three singles; sophomore Elisa Glas (Irun, Spain), who was 5-6 at number six singles; and sophomore Hannah Bartell (Rancho Santa Fe, CA), who was 5-6 also at number six singles.
