Terriers Win Eighth Straight Women's Tennis Title
April 28, 2002 | Women's Tennis

Senior captain Christina Causway (Wilson, NC) was named the Most Outstanding Performer at last weekend's (April 26-28) America East Women's Tennis Tournament as she helped lead the top-seeded Terriers to their eighth straight tournament title and their fourth straight bid to the NCAA Tournament.
In Sunday's (April 28th) championship match at Cullman Courts in New Haven, CT, the Terriers blanked second-seeded Stony Brook, 4-0. Because of inclement weather, the title match was moved indoors and the format was changed so that the singles matches were played first. With the Terriers winning the first four matches that were concluded, there was no need to play out the other two singles matches and the three doubles matches.
Causway, who has played number one singles all year for the Terriers, set the tone for the team when she posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory over the Seawolves' Martha Barrett. Sophomore Lindsey Dynof (Colts Neck, NJ) followed with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Patricia Gomez at number two singles.
Sophomore Elena deMendoza (Madrid, Spain) was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Karen Hansen at number three singles and freshman Silvia Guglielmi (Rome, Italy) sealed the team match with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Georgia Bushell at number four singles. Junior Alana Marcu (Leonia, NJ) and sophomore Elisa Glas (Irun, Spain) also led for the Terriers before their matches were stopped as the team title had been decided.
Each of the Terriers' top six players, Causway, Dynof, deMendoza, Guglielmi, Marcu and Glas, were named all-conference. Barrett of Stony Brook, Alexis Alexander of Hartford, Kim LeDonne of New Hampshire, and Violeta Petijevic of Albany joined them on the all-star team. Gary Glassman of Stony Brook was named the America East Coach of the Year. It is the Seawolves' first year in the conference.
The Terriers earned a berth into Sunday's championship match with a 7-0 blanking of fifth-seeded Vermont on Saturday (April 27th).
In the win over the Catamounts, deMendoza led the way as she did not lose a game en route to here 6-0-, 6-0 win over Katie Dandow at number three singles. In the meantime, Causway, Dynof, and Marcu lost just one game en route to their 6-1, 6-0 straight-set victories. Causway defeated Molly Moran at number one. Dynof bested Joanna Kahn at number two, while Marcu eliminated Sofi Rubinsten at number five. In the other two singles matches, Guglielmi defeated Sarah Taylor, 6-0, 6-2 at number four, and Glas won her number six singles match, 6-3, 6-0, over Alie Taylor. In the doubles competition, Causway and Dynof won 8-2 at number one. deMendoza and Guglielmi won at number two, 8-0, and Marcu and Glas won at number three, 8-1.
The Terriers have now won each of the 12 conference championships that they have entered. University of Vermont was the America East Champion in 1993 when Boston University competed in the Rolex Tournament. Unfortunately, both tournaments were held the same dates.
The Terriers' 2002 season will continue into the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight year. Three years ago, they earned their first trip ever to the national championship when they traveled to Pepperdine University. Two years ago, they were at UCLA, while last year they were pitted against Stanford.
B.U. will learn when and where it will play this Thursday (May 2nd) when the NCAA announces its selections.
