Softball Freshmen Make History In Winning Fourth Straight Award
April 29, 2002 | Softball
BOSTON - For the third week in a row, Boston University softball freshman Jamie Haas (Houston, TX) earned America East's Player of the Week award. Freshman Julie Henneke (Philadelphia, PA) was selected as the Rookie of the Week.
It is the first time since the America East Conference began honoring softball players that a team has had a Player of the Week four consecutive weeks. Quite an honor, but the two Terriers who combined to accomplished this honor were both freshmen. The pair has been instrumental this season in leading the Terriers to the league's regular season title and the top spot in next week's Championship.
Haas earned the Player of the Week award last week after tallying an on-base percentage of .608, pacing the Terriers to a 6-0 record. She shared the award with Hartford's Liz Nadeau. The previous week, Haas batted .647 with three doubles, a triple, and a home run. It is the fourth week in a row that a Terrier freshman earned the award, as Henneke did so on April 8, when she batted .600 with three homers and four RBI.
This week, Haas batted .615 (8-for-13) and handled all 17 chances at shortstop without an error as the Terriers went 3-1, including a sweep of second-place Hartford and its top-rated offense and pitching staff.
Henneke won the Rookie of the Week award on the strength of her 10-inning, complete-game shutout of Maine on April 24. She scattered three hits and struck out eight Black Bear batters in recording her eighth complete game and fifth shutout of the season.
Haas and Henneke rate in the top 10 of nearly every America East offensive statistical category. Haas leads the conference in batting with a .397 average, with Henneke fourth at .315. Haas also leads the conference in hits (56), and triples (6), while Henneke is third in hits (45), fourth in runs scored (22), and fifth in triples (3). She also has the league's third-lowest ERA at 0.99. Either Haas or Horrick ranks first in 16 of 23 team offensive statistics.
Boston University (25-20, 19-3 America East) wraps up its regular season schedule when it plays a single game at Massachusetts on Wednesday, May 1. Game time is 5 p.m. The Terriers have won 12 of 13 games and 22 of 26 since starting the season at 3-16.
