May 20, 2002 | Softball
BOSTON - Three Boston University softball players were named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division I All-Region Team. Freshman shortstop Jamie Haas (Houston, TX), freshman utility player Julie Henneke (Philadelphia, PA), and junior pitcher Robyn Horrick (Irvine, CA) were each Second Team selections.
Each of the trio garnered major America East Conference awards this season. Haas was voted as the league's Player of the Year, Henneke was the Rookie of the Year, and Horrick was named the Pitcher of the Year. The team sweep was the first time a conference team won all three major individual awards in one season. Haas became the first freshman to be deemed the Player of the Year.
In addition to her Player of the Year honor, Haas was named to the America East All-Conference First Team, as well as the All-Rookie Team. In the conference tournament, she was one of four Terriers to earn a spot on the All-Championship Team. The accolades were well deserved, as she led the league in a number of offensive categories, including batting (.404), hits (65), and triples (7). Her 65 hits set a team record for hits in a season.
Henneke joined Haas on the America East All-Conference First Team, All-Rookie Team, and All-Championship Team. She enjoyed a solid rookie season both at the plate and in the circle. She finished the season batting .321, fourth in America East, and was among the leaders in the conference in earned run average (0.96). She was 9-5 with 111 strikeouts in 97.2 innings.
Horrick, the Rookie of the Year in 2000, became just the second player in America East history to win the top rookie honor and later win either Player or Pitcher of the Year, joining Drexel's Lori Swanson who was Rookie of the Year in 1997 and Pitcher of the Year in 1999. Horrick finished the season with a 13-7 record and a conference-leading 0.93 earned run average. She struck out 173 and walked just 40 in 151 innings of work.
