Terrier Softball Sweeps America East Player Awards
May 8, 2002 | Softball

BURLINGTON, Vt.- The regular-season champion Boston University softball team took each of the top three America East softball individual player honors as first-year shortstop Jamie Haas (Houston, TX) was named Player of the Year, junior Robyn Horrick (Irvine, CA) was chosen Pitcher of the Year and first-year utility player Julie Henneke (Philadelphia, PA) was selected Rookie of the Year.
The awards, which are determined by votes of the conference's head coaches, were announced at the annual America East Softball Banquet on Wednesday, May 8.
Haas, who leads the conference in average (.396), hits (57) and triples (6), is the first rookie in America East history to win the Player of the Year award, which was first handed out in 1992. During the season, she was named the conference's Player of the Week three consecutive weeks, a first for any America East softball player. She also earned Rookie of the Week honors once.
Horrick, the Rookie of the Year in 2000, becomes just the second player in conference history to win the top rookie honor and later win either Player or Pitcher of the Year, joining Drexel's Lori Swanson who was Rookie of the Year in 1997 and Pitcher of the Year in 1999. Horrick is 11-6 with a conference-leading 0.88 earned run average. She has struck out 143 and walked 33 in 128 innings of work. She was named the league's Pitcher of the Week on April 15.
Henneke enjoyed a solid rookie season at both the plate and in the circle. She is batting .324, fourth in America East, and is second in the conference in earned run average (0.96). She is 8-4 with 98 strikeouts in 87.2 innings. During the season she earned the league's Player of the Week honor once, starting a string of four consecutive Terriers to win the award, a league first for any team.
All three were named to the league's All-Conference First Team. In addition, junior Tiffany Finateri (Las Vegas, NV) and freshman DeKenya Williams (San Diego, CA) earned spots on the league's All-Conference Second Team, and Haas, Henneke, and Williams were selected for the All-Rookie Team.
