Terriers Fall to Hartford, 1-0
October 24, 2003 | Women's Soccer
BOSTON--Stephanie Pothier scored on a loose ball in the box just 2:17 into the game and the University of Hartford was able to withstand a decided territorial disadvantage to hold off the Terrier women's soccer team, 1-0, in an America East Conference game at Nickerson Field Friday night, Oct. 24.
Goalkeeper Heather Hinton stopped nine shots for the Hawks (5-10-2, 4-2-1) who dealt the Terriers (8-5-4, 4-1-1) their first conference and first home loss of the season.
B.U. outshot Hartford, 9-2.
Pothier scored the game-winner off of a free kick from midfield by Hilde Bakke. The kick sailed into a group just inside the box, deflecting off Hawk forward Jaime Pendleton to Pothier, who was all alone. Her shot beat Terrier keeper Jess Clinton (Valley Stream, NY) low to the right side.
B.U. had an opportunity to tie the score minutes later when sophomore forward Meghann Cook (Melrose, MA) split the Hartford defense with a clear look at the cage. Her shot from 10 yards out was wide.
The Terriers' next best opportunity came early in the second half. Senior tri-captain Rebecca Beyer (Kansas City, MO) flicked a header just over the crossbar off of a corner from Cook just 2:30 in.
The Terriers, who had eight corners to Hartford's one, maintained a steady pressure throughout the game, but were unable to capitalize.
With just under 18 minutes to go in the second half, Pothier broke down the right with a clear path towards Clinton. Sophomore back Brittany McDonald (Lindenhurst, NY) hustled back and broke the play up, keeping the score 1-0.
B.U. will look to get back into the win column on Sunday, October 26 when they face conference foe Stony Brook on the road. Game time is 1 pm.
