Women's Soccer Ties Dartmouth In Double Overtime, 1-1
October 8, 2003 | Women's Soccer
BOSTON--The Terrier women's soccer team, trailing Dartmouth 1-0 at the half, scored early in the second half and that's the way the match ended as the two teams battled to a 1-1 double overtime tie at Nickerson Field on Wednesday, Oct. 18.
It marked the second straight game that B.U. has played to a 1-1 tie as the Terriers and the University of Maine played to that outcome on Sunday, Oct. 5. Overall, it was B.U.'s fourth tie this year as the team's overall record is 6-3-4. Dartmouth, which had won its last three matches, is now 4-5-1 overall.
With her team trailing, 1-0, at the intermission, Terrier sophomore forward Melissa Shulman took a pass from sophomore Brooke Bingham in the opening minutes of the second half. Bingham sent Shulman out with a head ball off a goal kick coming out of the Dartmouth end. Shulman then raced past two Big Green defenders and fired the ball to the top left corner of the goal. The shot beat Dartmouth goalkeeper Anne Marbarger at the 46:52 mark and the Terriers had their tie.
For Shulman, it was the third straight game in which she scored a goal and gave her a team-leading seven goals this season.
The Big Green drew first blood at 16:46 of the match when Lea Kiefer, who came into the game as her team's leading scorer with six goals, picked up a loose ball in the Terrier box. Her shot to the lower right of the goal beat Terrier senior goalkeeper Jessica Clinton.
"I am very disappointed with this outcome," said Terrier head coach Nancy Feldman. "I thought this was a very winnable game, but we came out too relaxed in the first half. We didn't have any urgency, and we were not aggressive enough over the entire field.
"I thought we were more dangerous than Dartmouth," continued the coach. "But, we had a lack of focus tonight. Maybe one of the problems was that the game started at 4:00 p.m., and we didn't have the mentality of a 7:00 p.m. game. But, it was a 4:00 p.m. game for Dartmouth, as well.
"On a positive side, I liked how we fought back from being down 1-0 and scored the tying goal," said Feldman. "But, overall, I am not happy about this game. This was an important game for us to win, and we didn't have a strong enough will to win it. We can't sit back like this and expect to win a (conference) championship."
