Terriers To Meet New Hampshire In Semis Of Conference Tournament
November 5, 2003 | Women's Soccer
BOSTON, Mass-The top-seeded Terrier women's soccer team will take on fourth-ranked University of New Hampshire at 6:00 p.m. on Friday evening, Nov. 7, in one of two semifinals of the America East Women's Soccer Tournament that will be played at the Terriers' Nickerson Field.
In the other semifinal game, second-ranked Hartford will take on third-seeded Maine at 3:00 p.m.
The matchups were set on Tuesday, Nov. 4, when the Wildcats, behind a school-record five goals by Jackie Wishoski, defeated fifth-ranked Northeastern, 7-2. In the other quarterfinal game, the Black Bears, who are advancing to the tournament semifinals for the first time in school history, eliminated UMBC, 3-1.
The winners of the two semifinal games will meet each other at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 9 at Nickerson Field in the tournament title game and a bid to the NCAA Tournament.
This will mark the second time this year the Terriers and Wildcats will be meeting. In a game played on Oct. 7 at Nickerson Field, the Terriers scored single goals in the first and second half and senior goalkeeper Jessica Clinton (Valley Stream, NY) earned the shutout in the Terriers' 2-0 win.
Sophomore Susan Marschall (Baton Rouge, LA) scored the only goal the Terriers would need at 30:17 of the match. Senior Katie Chen (Hamilton, MA) earned the assist. Then, at 65:13, sophomore Melissa Shulman (Huntington, NY) added an insurance goal with an assist to sophomore Meghann Cook (Melrose, MA).
The Terrier defense held the Wildcats to just two shots, one in each half. Wishoski, who finished the regular season leading the conference in both points (1.47) and goals (0.63) per game, did not have a shot on goal vs. the Terriers. Obviously, from her performance against Northeastern, Wishoski continues to be a major scoring threat.
B.U., which closed out its regular season last Saturday, Nov. 1, with a 4-0 win over Binghamton, will take an overall record of 11-5-4 into the tournament. In conference play, the Terriers finished with a 7-1-1 record en route to winning their third America East regular-season title in four years.
In 2000, they posted a 9-0-0 regular-season conference record and went on to win the post-season tournament and earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament. The following year, the repeated as both the regular-season (10-0-1) and tournament champions and returned to the NCAAs. Last year, however, the Terriers slipped to a 4-3-1 conference record and did not qualify for the conference's post-season tournament.
