Doubles Prove Pivotal As Terriers Lose To Miami University
March 12, 2003 | Women's Tennis

The Terrier women's tennis team dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 decision to Miami University on Wednesday (March 12th) as the Terriers continued their annual spring break trip to Florida. Today's match was played at Boca Raton.
The pivotal point came in doubles where the RedHawks won two of the three matches, and, thus the one match point. Since each team won three singles matches, the point in the doubles play proved key.
This was the second time in the last three matches that B.U. had lost by the 4-3 margin, as the team also lost by the slimmest of margins against South Florida on March 9th.
Against Miami, the Terriers had three tough doubles matches, as they won one by an 8-4 margin and lost two by identical 9-7 scores.
Senior captain Alana Marcu (Leonia, NJ) and junior Elisa Glas (Irun, Spain) defeated Ilze Meyer and Maura Trauernicht, 8-5, at number three doubles. However, the RiverHawks countered with wins at numbers one and two doubles. At number one, Megan Zimpfer and Remy Swain defeated Terrier juniors Lindsay Dynof (Colts Neck, NJ) and Elena deMendoza (Madrid, Spain), 9-7. Then, at number two, Brooke Peyton and Nancy Wiegand assured their team the doubles' point with a 9-7 victory over freshmen Laura Ahmes (East Sarasota, FL) and Monica Shepherd (Austin, TX).
Each team won three singles matches. For the Terriers, Dynof defeated Zimpfer at number one, 6-3, 6-2, while Glas eliminated Peyton, 6-2 in the first set. Then, in the second set, with Glas leading, 1-0, Peyton had to retire. The Terriers' third win came at number six where Ahmes won a 6-4, 6-1, straight set victory over Travernicht.
Miami's wins came at number two singles where Grace Cascarilla defeated deMendoza, 6-2, 6-1; at number four where Wiegand needed three hard-fought sets to defeat Marcu, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2; and at number five where Swain beat freshman Aimee Charest (Somerset), 6-2, 6-3.
