Terriers Lose To South Florida In Spring Break Opener

The Terrier women's tennis team opened its annual spring break trip to Florida with a tough 4-3 loss to the University of South Florida.
Each team won three singles matches, as the key point came in doubles where the Bulls won two of the three matches and the single point.
The Terriers' senior captain Alana Marcu (Leonia, NJ) and junior Elisa Glas (Irun, Spain) won the team's only doubles match with an 8-4 victory at number three over Gina Craig and Talia Romero. But, USF came back to win at numbers one and two to clinch the doubles point. At number one, Fabiana Taverna and Luisa Obando defeated Terrier junior Lindsay Dynof (Colts Neck, NJ) and freshman Monica Shepherd (Austin, TX), 8-2. Then, at number two doubles, Jamie Larson and Patricia Kolendo eliminated freshman Laura Ahmes (East Sarasota, FL) and junior Elena deMendoza (Madrid, Spain), 8-5.
In singles play, the Terriers won at numbers four, five, and six, while USF took the matches at numbers one, two, and three.
In the top three singles positions, Taverna defeated Dynof, 6-0, 6-1 at number one; Kolendo also had a 6-1, 6-0 straight set victory over deMendoza, and Olendo defeated Glas, 6-1, 6-1.
It was then the Terriers' turn to sweep to wins at numbers four through six. At number four, Marcu eliminated Romero, 2-6, 6-2 (10-4), while freshman Aimee Charest (Somerset) defeated Craig, 6-4 and was leading 4-3 in the second set when Craig was forced to retire. Finally, Ahmes enjoyed a 6-3, 6-0 win over Belen Pandre at number six.
