Terriers Close Out Season On Winning Note Vs. Quinnipiac

The Terrier women's tennis team closed out its 2002-03 regular-season on a winning note with a 7-0 win over visiting Quinnipiac at the Terriers' Track and Tennis Center on Tuesday (April 22nd).
The Terriers have just three days off before they begin quest of their 13th straight America East team title. The team, which will be seeded number one in the seven-team tournament that gets underway on Friday, April 25th at the Connecticut Tennis Center in New Haven, CT.
On the opening day of the matches, the Terriers will receive a bye as number-two seed Binghamton will take on number-seven Albany at 9:00 a.m. Number-three New Hampshire will meet number-six Hartford at noon, while number-four Stony Brook will battle number-five Vermont at 5:00 p.m.
The Terriers' first match will be on Saturday (April 26th) when they meet the winner of the Stony Brook-Vermont match at noon.
The championship match will be played on Sunday (April 27th) at noon with the winner scheduled to receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

One of the bright spots of the Quinnipiac match was the Terriers were able to field a full team for the first time since their 7-0 win over Dartmouth on March 23rd. Junior Elena deMendoza (Madrid, Spain), who missed both the Boston College (April 12th) and Yale (April 15th) matches because of an appendectomy, returned to action vs. Quinnipiac. In addition, freshman Monica Shepherd (Austin, TX), who was sidelined for the two matches with a hand injury, also returned to action vs. Quinnipiac.
DeMendoza played just singles and came away with a 7-6, 6-4 win at number two over Danielle Rautenberg, while Shepherd teamed with freshman Laura Ahmes (East Sarasota, FL) to play number one doubles. They lost their match, 8-2, to Cristin Arahovites and Tina Hoang, 8-2.
However, the Terriers came away with the match point at doubles by virtue of winning the other two doubles matches. Junior Lindsey Dynof (Colts Neck, NJ) and Aimee Charest (Somerset) defeated Kim Piazza and Liz Axler, 8-3, at number two, while senior captain Alana Marcu (Leonia, NJ) and junior Elisa Glas (Irun, Spain) bested Rautenberg and Heather Rahm, 8-3.
In the singles, both Dynof and Charest swept their opponents by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores. Dynof defeated Piazza at number one and Charest blanked Kat Ehle at number six.
In the other singles matches, Ahmes defeated Arahovites, 6-2, 6-1, at number three, Marcu won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, over Rahm at number four and Glas defeated Axler at number five, 6-4, 6-0.
