Women's Soccer Drops Season Opener To BC, 3-1
August 31, 2003 | Women's Soccer
Newton, MA-The Terrier women's soccer team spotted host Boston College a 3-0 lead at the half then battled back in the second half but it wasn't enough as the Terriers opener their 2003 season with a 3-1 loss to the Eagles on Sunday afternoon, August 31st.
"I liked how gritty we played in the second half, but they don't give prizes for how you play just in the second half," said a disappointed Terrier head coach Nancy Feldman after the game. "You have to come out ready to battle and establish your aggressiveness, and we didn't today.
"It is a dog-fight from the beginning, and we were outmuscled in the first half," the coach continued. "BC had a good pace in the first half and we just had to be quicker with the ball. We were able to create a number of chances in the second half, but we have to do that from the beginning. We have to fight for it at the start of the game."
The Eagles, who had opened their season on Friday with a lopsided 10-0 win over Wagner, dominated play against the Terriers in the first 45 minutes of action. While taking seven shots and scoring on three of them, the Eagles held the Terriers to zero shots on goal.
BC opened the scoring just at the 8:11 mark of the match when Katie McGregor took a throw in, made a move around the Terrier defense and put the shot in the right hand corner of the Terrier cage.
A little more than eight minutes later, Beth Totman scored what proved to be the game-winning goal when she took a shot from just outside the 18-yard box. The ball ricocheted off Terrier goalie Jessica Clinton's body. Totman picked up the loosed ball and fired into the Terrier goal. Then, with just 2:54 left in the first half, Jenny Maurer added an insurance goal when she rifled the ball past Clinton into the far right hand corner of the goal.
The Terriers finally got on the scoreboard midway through the second half when Melissa Shulman scored her first goal since November 3, 2001 found the right corner of the BC goal. Shulman, who had six goals as a freshman two years ago but redshirted last season with leg problems, is expected to play a key role in the Terrier attack this year.
Just minutes after Shulman's goal, the Terriers' Meghann Cook threatened to cut the deficit to just one goal but her shot from the top right corner of the 18-yard box went wide left. It proved to be the Terriers' last good scoring threat of the afternoon.
