Sabatino Advances To Quarterfinals in USTA Tennis Center Invitational

FLUSHING, NY-Freshman Gina Sabatino highlighted the Terriers' performance at the USTA National Tennis Center Invitational which featured 21 teams from across the country this past holiday weekend, Oct. 9-11.
Sabatino (Waltham, MA) won her first two matches in Flight B singles division against Penn's Shelah Chao and Dartmouth's Maggie Suydam to reach the quarterfinals before losing to Harvard's Stephanie Schnitter in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.
Junior Cheri Lapane (Reading, MA) also had a strong showing, winning two of her three singles division matches, while the doubles combination of Sabatino and junior Monica Shepherd (Austin, TX) had a thrilling come-from-behind win in their match against Fallon Koon and Miranda Gutierez of South Carolina. Down 6-3, the pair managed to rally in defeating Gutierez and Koon, 9-8.
Shepherd, junior Aimee Charest (Somerset, MA), and sophomore Gabbi Hernandez (Palo Alto, CA) each won one of her singles matches. The doubles team of Charest and freshman Laura Stiekema (Amsterdam, The Netherlands), as well as the team of Hernandez and Lapane were 0-3 in the tournament. Stiekema also finished 0-3 in her singles matches.
